Smashburger's newest San Diego location opened today, downtown in the East Village neighborhood, on Market and 9th. This location is the fourth in San Diego, with three more planned to open in the next year. I stopped by the press night yesterday and sampled a few items, including a Spicy Baja burger, sweet potato fries, veggie "frites" (flash-fried asparagus spears, carrot sticks, and green beans), and the signature San Diego burger, topped with avocado, sour cream, pepper jack cheese, chipotle mayo, and fresh cilantro on a soft torta roll.
The signature offering was definitely a tasty burger, but the Spicy Baja, which is available at most locations, was more flavorful—in no small part due to the fresh jalapeno peppers, which gave the burger some serious heat.
It was great to see some creative options for sides, like fried pickles, chili, and the veggie frites, plus lots of bun choices, including classic egg, multigrain, spicy chipotle, torta roll, or no bun at all.
It will be interesting to see how the downtown burger wars play out, with the new Hodad's location, plus another Burger Lounge set to open in the Gaslamp.
