While on a nine-day trip to Italy I learned that Florence is foodie Nirvana. Their delicious local cuisine is based on meats, mild cheeses, and produce, all locally grown. So with all this great local food, why would I venture to have a burger in Firenze? I figured if any Italian town would perfect a burger, it would be here. After days of pizza, pasta, cheeses, meats and bread, this was a welcome change.
Located on the banks of the Arno river just past the Ponte Vecchio, you'll find a special restaurant called Harry's Bar. Beyond food, Harry's Bar is known for its belief in quality of tradition, presentation, and respect. Chances are you'll be greeted by Roberto, a gracious host with a big smile who'll gladly show you to a table in their fancy dining room. Their two menus, one of local cuisine and one of French leaning selection of specials created by chef Daniele Diodati, will appear to have no prices—that is, if you're a lady. Harry's never lets a lady see the prices.
Their griddled burger ($21) is a no joke: a thick, sturdy sandwich that is juicy and just ever so slightly sweet. The all natural and locally raised beef is top notch. Italian beef (not to be confused with the famous Chicago-born sandwich) has a different flavor than US beef that is more farm fresh in its accent. As with most Italian food, the bread is amazing, in this case a lightly toasted sesame seed bun. Let the juices from your burger drip onto the chips—trust me
