Milwaukee: Heartbreak and Disappointment at Charcoal Grill

I was enamored by the memory of the bison burgers I used to eat at Charcoal Grill with my father when I was a kid and teen. At the time they seemed exotic, and they were delicious, as were the beef burgers. Now, all these years later, I wonder how the restaurant is still in business.

Madison: Burger Greatness for Meat Eaters and Vegetarians at Graze

Last year when chef Tory Miller of L'Etoile opened up his much more casual affair Graze—where he could apply his vast skills and devotion to locavorism—Madisonians knew they were in for a treat. In making his burger, Miller delivers a decidedly straightforward affair with impeccable ingredients that come together in stellar fashion. Not content to only please meat eaters, Graze also offers a veggie burger that raises the bar for what a meatless burger can be.

Milwaukee: Big, Boring, Blah Burgers at Harry's Bar and Grill

I've been to Harry's Bar and Grill a few times in the last decade or so, and it's always been on my short list of places to review for AHT because everything I've eaten there has been above average. It's a vibrant place with interesting menu items and specials at fairly reasonable prices. I had never had a burger there, however, and that's where things went wrong.

Chain Reaction: Champps Americana

Champps Americana has been around for over 25 years, with most of their locations in the Midwest, East Coast, and Texas. As it's far from a mega-chain—it only has a few locations in any given state—it feels much more localized and neighborhood friendly than other chains. Bonus points for that. And more points for having pretty great burgers, especially for a chain.

Grilled: Lacey Muszynski, Milwaukee Correspondent

"Grilled" is our series of Q&As of burger-related people. It's been a while since we've done these regularly, but we're starting up again by interviewing our contributors so you can get to know the people behind our site. Today we're grilling Lacey Muszynski, who checks in every other week with a new Milwaukee burger review. You can also check out her milkshake reviews (they go hand-in-hand with burgers!) at Serious Eats: Drinks.

Milwaukee: Classic Americana on a Bun (and the Walls) at Nite Owl Drive-In

This tiny, classic American joint has been serving up deliciously greasy hand-pattied jumbo burgers since 1948.

Milwaukee: Irish Pub Hospitality at Mulligan's

Irish pubs seem to be a dime a dozen, but many don't serve food worthy of a second trip. Mulligan's Irish Pub and Grill in Franklin is an exception—the happy hour specials will bring you in, but the food will bring you back.

Chain Reaction: Culver's

Around southeastern Wisconsin, there's a ton of competition for Culver's. Move farther afield, and into other states, and there are fewer, if any, butter burger and custard joints. After this visit for AHT, my opinion still stands: Culver's is hands down better than the giant fast food chains, but if I'm in Milwaukee, I'll pick Kopp's, or maybe even Five Guys, any day.

Milwaukee: Northpoint Custard Doesn't Live Up to High Bartolotta Standards

Location, location, location. The real estate mantra must be true for burgers as well, because I'm not really sure why Northpoint Custard's burgers are so popular otherwise.
