Meet the Smoke Shack, Shake Shack's New Burger

The Smoke Shack is a classic Shack Burger, minus the lettuce and tomato, and with the addition of cherry pepper relish and Niman Ranch applewood-smoked bacon. The bacon is good, but the relish is the real story here: It adds a sweet, slightly hot tang to the burger that a pickle might, only this relish is much more delicious than mere pickles. Not to downplay this bacon; it's good, smokey and cooked to the perfect crispiness, even surviving its trip on the subway back to Serious Eats HQ without turning the least bit limp.

The Shake Smash Guy: How To Have The Ultimate Burger Experience In Downtown Brooklyn

Rather than settle for a sub-optimal burger-topping-fry combo, Serious Eats editors Carey Jones, Erin Zimmer, and I went straight into the heart of the Burger Zone (the official name for the area of downtown Brooklyn that now houses a Shake Shack, a Smashburger, and a Five Guys all within a five-minute walkable radius). Once we reached the epicenter of the three restaurants, we split up and headed out to pick up a topped burger and side of fries from each restaurant. The idea was that we'd use the different components to assemble The Ultimate Burger and Fries Combo, a high end fast-food meal so epic that it requires the use of capital letters.

Shake Shack Opening in New Haven This Fall

Today Shake Shack announced they'll be opening a location in New Haven, Connecticut, in fall of 2012 at 986 Chapel Street—right by Yale's Old Campus (lucky students, yeah) and about a block away from Louis' Lunch, known as "The Birthplace of the Hamburger Sandwich."

Shake Shack Opening in Downtown Brooklyn Tomorrow

After announcing the location a year ago, Shake Shack is finally opening their first Brooklyn location in the Fulton Mall tomorrow, December 20, at 409 Fulton Street (map). There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m with Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
