Six Great Picks for San Diego CityBeat Burger Week
From March 7-16, several local restaurants will serve a featured burger for just $5 during San Diego CityBeat Burger Week. The list of participating restaurants is a bit of a head-scratcher, but the alternative weekly did pull several worthy spots into the mix. Here are my top six picks (in no particular order):
Carnitas' Snack Shack (AHT review) will serve a pork patty topped with candied bacon and gorgonzola on a pretzel bun (pictured above). I had a similar version of this burger at the SWISH Burger Battle and it was awesome. You can trust this place to do delicious things with pork.

Burger Lounge (AHT review) officially adds bacon to their menu on March 7, so CityBeat Burger Week is a great time to try it. The featured burger is a bacon cheeseburger with a 1/4 pound grass-fed patty topped with nitrite free thick cut applewood-smoked bacon, organic American cheese, lettuce, tomato, house-made 1000 Island dressing, and grilled or fresh onion on a toasted bun.

The creamy peanut butter, strawberry jelly, and bacon-topped Peanut Butter & Jeallousy from Slater's 50/50 might sound pretty whack, but when I tried it at a local burger battle this past November, I was shocked at how tasty it was. For $5, it's worth taking a gamble on this unusual creation, even if you ultimately don't agree.

If you're all about bleu cheese, Small Bar is where you want to be. The aptly named spot will serve their Blue Boy burger, a 1/3 pound beef patty that's ground in house and mixed with duck fat. Toppings include sharp cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and Maytag bleu cheese sauce.

Saltbox may have fumbled my burger when I went in to write a review but a mere five bucks for a burger in such stylish surroundings is a steal. The restaurant in the Palomar Hotel is serving a lamb burger topped with onion, cucumber, arugula, roasted tomato, and curry aioli on a pretzel bun. Get a cocktail, too; they're killer.

Family-friendly neighborhood hangout Station Tavern (AHT review) is going the veggie route. Their featured burger is a house-made spicy black bean burger with the standard vegetable roughage and creamy lime cilantro spread. It's better than their standard beef burger by a mile.
