As quickly as the cronut burger appeared, ready to dazzle attendees of the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, so did it disappear. EPIC Burger and Waffles closed voluntarily on Wednesday as Toronto Public Health launched an investigation into nearly 100 cases of food poisoning, all of which shared only one common element: the cronut burger.
EPIC Burger and Waffles published an official statement on their Facebook page yesterday, thanking friends, family, and customers for their support, while Dominique Ansel, creator of the trademarked pastry, addressed the cronut burger controversy on Twitter, slamming the Canadian vendor for "ripping off" his idea.
Results of lab tests announced earlier this afternoon at at Toronto Public Health news conference confirmed that the cronut burgers were contaminated with staphylococcus aureus, which can cause severe gastrointestinal illness.
