Chicago Burger Tour with George Motz#1: Edzo's Burger Shop
2116 West 95th Street, Chicago, IL 60643 (map); 773-445-7218
When George Motz asked if I wanted to go on a burger tour, I had to say yes. I mean, wasn't I practically required to go? How could I turn down the chance to eat an inordinate amount of ground beef around Chicago with the man that literally wrote the book on the subject? As the author of Hamburger America, I figured he had a few things to teach me about the subject. (In his spare time, Motz also runs film festivals and hosts Made in America on the Travel Channel.) Plus, just a few days before tour, news leaked that he'd be turning Hamburger America into a TV show. I said yes before I realized where we'd go. Frankly, I didn't care.
I was heartened to see that we'd be making stops at Edzo's (a joint he'd never been to) and Top Notch Beefburgers (one of my absolute favorite burgers in the area). As great as the two are, I don't get to either too often because they happen to be far from my place. Unfortunately, both are a trek in opposite directions, meaning that this little burger tour would encompass a good 26 miles of Chicago, with a few suburban miles thrown in for good measure.
In the middle we were able to check out the behind-the-scenes action at the latest M Burger location in the Water Tower Place. It has been one of my go-to spots in River North for a while now (I've been known to indulge in M Burger after events in the area), but it was fascinating to see why he loved the mini-chain so much.
