The notion of dropping the entire contents of another iconic sandwich on top of my burger doesn't seem like the best of ideas. Why sully a perfectly delicious burger with flavors of another perfectly delicious sandwich? Perfection has a definitive geometry that can be thrown off by even the subtlest of changes. How many times has your burger been undermined by a too generous helping of this topping or that condiment?
Of course, fast food chains aren't always trying to make something delicious. Rather, they're just trying to tempt us to come in again when they offer up things like Carl's Jr.'s most recent experiment: the Philly Cheese Steak Burger. I took the bait and stopped by to see how this new burger compares to its beauty shots.
When unwrapped my Philly Cheese Steak Burger was barely recognizable as one. The glam shot shows all that thin-sliced steak piled high on the burger, but almost all of mine was hiding under the bun.
That said, the flavor was all there. Carl's Jr. definitely manages to capture the defining flavors of the Philly classic. It's not for me, but it's probably a more accurate imitation than you'd guess.
