Doughnut Burger from Rub BBQ
I know you guys aren't that into doughnut burgers, but as we've never really reviewed one (we've just mentioned them a bunch of times) I took the opportunity to try last night's special burger at Rub BBQ (whose burgers have been reviewed by Ed) featuring a toasted and halved glazed-doughnut-for-a-bun as my first ever doughnut burger experience.
First off, if you don't like sweet buns with your burgers, you'll hate this. ...Because it's sweet dough coated in sugar. Duh. While I don't prefer sweet buns over non-sweet, they don't bother me either (and I'd be happy if more places tried using slightly sweet buns from Chinese bakeries for burgers). The sweetness of the doughnut didn't overpower the deeply charred, moist patty combined with the toppings of sautéed onions, cheese, pickle chips, and chipotle aioli. Sweet and savory melded together nicely—if you're down with that combo, you'll probably like this burger.
My only problem with the doughnut bun was the texture. It was very light and delicate—which makes sense for a doughnut, of course (these were from Dunkin' Donuts because, as Always Hungry pointed out,
there's currently no Krispy Kreme location in New York City there's currently no place to buy fresh Krispy Kremes in New York City—I'll have to look into the Penn Station location), but for a burger I'd want something with a bit more chew. Doughnut Plant's yeast doughnuts come to mind, but at over $2 apiece, that's rather excessive for a bun. Despite its light texture, the doughnut held up surprisingly well to the fillings and didn't fall apart.
Overall, it was a tasty, non-life changing experience. If you want to try a doughnut burger in New York City, you won't be able to get it again at Rub; owner Andrew Fischel told us they're sticking to making a new burger every Monday for a year without any repeats, although they may bring some of the more popular special burgers to the menu in the future (my vote goes for the onion burger).
To my knowledge, only Crave Shack in Astoria has doughnut burgers as a permanent part of the menu in New York City. If anyone's tried it, let us know what you think!
Disclosure: My burger was complimentary.
