Here are the results to this week's poll: What Are Your Favorite Burger Toppings? From 2,433 votes as of 11:30 a.m.:

Lettuce 15%
Tomato 14%
Raw onion 14%
Caramelized onion 12%
Mushrooms 5%
Hot Peppers 4%
Pickles 13%
Bacon 16%
Fried egg 5%
Other 3%

Not including cheese was a sort of intentional oversight on my part—surely, it would've been number one by a landslide if the results of our cheese poll are any indication. After cheese, bacon is number one, but not overwhelmingly so. Write-in suggestions included guacamole, ham, beet, butter, green chiles, onion rings, "more cheese," and commando style—a naked burger.

Thanks for your participation! Stay tuned for next week's poll.

That's a beautiful photo. In the lettuce category, which I eschew completely, I wonder what the preference is between whole leaf and shredded? I hear a lot of people saying shredded on a burger is just wrong!

Shredded lettuce doesn't belong on a burger, it belongs on a BLT pizza or maybe a taco.

One major pet peeve of mine is places that use romaine lettuce and leave the rib in. Dine-in, the burger might be served open faced and the lettuce wouldn't be an issue, but I usually do takeout and it's always horrible biting into a burger and ending up with a whole leaf of steamed lettuce hanging out of my mouth by the fibrous rib.

Agree about the shredded lettuce not belonging on a burger.

I may be in the minority here, but to me there is no substitute for a leaf of very crisp iceberg lettuce (yes, I know many people consider iceberg an abomination). There's something about the burst of juices and warmth from the burger combinging with the cool bite of firm lettuce. Of course I'm one of those that voted for a non grilled bun in order to insure this deliciousness. Burger porn indeed.

Lettuce and tomato are great, but let's be honest, these only work if they are fresh and crisp! I have had countless burgers with obviously old lettuce and less than desirable tomatoes which I've ended up plucking off.

If you have to take off your topping, then it wasn't worth it in the first place!

My favorite toppings are mushrooms and crisp bacon! Can't beat it!

Lettuce, tomato, and onion (raw or cooked) are all I need need. If it came down to one item, onion is it. No other veggie flavors as well.

if you like burgers don't come to chapel hill north carolina, the worst burgers are in north carolina, some stupid rule, restaurants have to cook the burger till it dead.
