Dear AHT: Val's Burgers in Hayward, California

Here's a recent recommendation we received in the AHT inbox.

Dear AHT, Letters From Our ReadersI fly 100,000 miles a year to every city in the country and consider myself a burger lover and de facto critic

Val's is still by far the best in the USA, and still not reviewed by my favorite burger site. What gives???? Check the best of lists...you don't know what you are missing.

Meet me there, I'll buy you a Mama Burger and watch you and the sandwich melt.

Regards, Jody

This is the second recommendation we've received from Jody about Val's Burgers. We'd love to try it, but our AHT correspondents unfortunately don't live near there. :( If we're ever in the vicinity, we'll know where to get a burger.

Klara Kim, who took the above photo of a burger at Val's, gave it first place out of ten spots in her East and South Bay Burger Quest. Are you a Val's Burger lover too?

I don't live near Val's (I'm 350 miles away in LA) but have been very happy the couple of times I stopped by. It's not THAT far off the 580 but I don't think public transportation is an option to get there. Burgers are juicy, cooked to order and a good value for what you get. Easily one of my favorites in the Bay Area ( along with Burgermeister and Burger Joint).

If you are in the Greater SF Bay Area a burger at Val's is worth the trip. A while back Val's was named the Best Burger in the West by Sunset Magazine. I have only been to Val's on a few occasions, but I cannot think of a better burger. Understand that Val's is an "old school" kinda place. It is not The Counter with their 312,120+ different burger combinations. And you're not gonna get a Free Range Emu burger at Val's either. What you will get is a very tasty, beautifully cooked burger that goes very nicely with the huge milkshakes they serve. Dammit, now I'm gonna have to make the 45 minute drive over there tomorrow.
