Walter Foods

253 Grand Street, Brooklyn NY 11211 (map); 718-387-8783; walterfoods.com
Cooking Method: Grilled
Short Order: A satisfying, juicy burger if you're in the neighborhood.
Want Fries with That? The burger comes with skinny golden fries.
Price: Short Rib Burger, $13

Since I was already at Walter Foods for our fancy pants fried chicken taste test (yup, what a hard job I've got), I figured I may as well get in a burger review as well. Because nothing says "balanced meal" like fried chicken and a burger.

The short rib burger ($13) from Walter Foods is a 7-ounce short rib patty on a brioche roll topped with bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a pickle on the side. Check out the innards after the jump.

Although I ordered the burger medium rare, it came out closer to rare. If rare burgers make you queasy, you might want to order medium, but I was fine with having an undercooked burger (hey, this isn't Cargill meat; it's from Master Purveyors). The meat was juicy and well salted; even my non-burger loving dining companion enjoyed it. Neither of us were fans of the bacon though, which was crispy and stiff without any pliancy. The bacon wasn't really necessary anyway since the rest of the burger was flavorful enough. The soft brioche bun complemented the burger fine

Overall, this isn't a burger you'd go out of your way for, but I'd recommend it if you're looking for a good burger in Williamsburg. And don't forget about dessert; who doesn't like a warm fruit cobbler?

@Robin - Looks taste, alas im not a rare burger fan but medium seems like it would've been quite nice. No shots of the fries? :-( Its a tragedy that the bacon played no factor in the overall burger! Oh how I love a good bacon cheese burger. And was the brioche sweet? Not a huge fan - who knew?

@Lvn4life: The fries were fine, but not really worth pointing out; they weren't memorably bad or awesome. The brioche wasn't too sweet, at least not in any way that interfered with the rest of the burger.. It's not my favorite type of bun but I don't have a strong dislike for it.

May I just take this moment to propose that we, as the best arbiters of all things 'Hamburger', consign the brioche bun to the dumpster? Brioche has its place...it's just not on a Hamburger (please note the capitol H)! As I write this, I am waiting until exactly 12 noon before I enjoy my Wednesday Hamburger and fries at my local Hamburger temple. Hamburgers are nothing to experiment with...they are the staff of life. I think I forgot my meds.

I thought bacon was supposed to be crisp on ANY burger!! Who wants flimsy bacon! Gross!

@jlewfoodie: Like potato-chip crisp? Eh...nah, do not want. (Not saying I want bacon that's totally flimsy..that's probably worse than all crisp.)

i had this burger last night and frickin' LOVED it!
