The Ten Worst Burger Ideas Ever

20090904-whitecastle.jpg

From Cafe Society comes a list of The Ten Worst Burger Ideas Ever. The only one I've had the displeasure of trying is the Frozen Microwavable White Castle Cheeseburgers, and considering I can still remember their foulness after 15 years or so, I think it's safe to say they belong on that list. Other offenders include the McDLT, Carl's Jr Breakfast Burger, and the Canburger.

i have tried the frozen white castle burgers and tough i can't say that i go out of my way to buy them... i didn't hate them either. it's in the category of "frozen french bread pizza". certainly not as good as the freshly prepared original, but we are talking about lazy, late night muchie-grub, here, so i don't judge to harshly.

@HerbyN: I dunno..I'd so rather eat frozen french bread pizza. ;)

I feel so old--I remember (ordering) the McLean.

Erm, I hate to say it, maybe, but I once used to buy these White Castle things, the cheeseburger variety, and snarf them semi-regularly, en masse... purchased from Wal Mart even! Years ago, but still. In the realm of trashy junk food, these were a win, as i recall.

Vending machine burgers. Need I say more?

The frozen white castle burgers can be delicious, the trick is a steam them instead of microwaving them. It restores the original fresh texture.

Of course if you don't like white castle anyway... well then you must enjoy drinking your tea in little cups with your pinkie finger extended out!

While I would never buy these myself, someone brought us a couple of boxes when they heard that I had had a White Castle craving. We popped them into those "pie" makers that you take camping, those hinged ones. We cooked them over a fire and they ended up tasting pretty darn good.

White Castle frozen burgers are the best of the frozen prepared burger lot. I would actually buy them, not often. But then I have never had the fresh article. My wife has. She says they are good.

I have to agree that vending machine burgers are far far worse. In fact I would say they do not qualify as hamburgers.

Among the worst are Mcdonalds new Angus burgers... oh man these are bad, dry, tasteless and an all round bad idea.

I eat double cheeseburgers, big macs and quarter pounders. The Angus attempt at McD's is a miserable failure.

My dad and I bought the frozen White Castles a couple of times when they first came out and thought they were just okay. One of the 10 worst burger ideas, though? Hardly.

Also, I must say that even though I don't frequent Carl's Jr. much anymore, their Breakfast Burger is good. It is a lot of food, but I would choose it over many of the available fast-food breakfast options out there.

I don't mind them, but what I don't appreciate is that they are more expensive frozen from the store than in an actual white castle! This outrages me.

I live in L.A. and we don't have any White Castles out here, so, the frozen sliders were my only alternative. And although they're not true burgers by any means, I enjoy the microwave version from time to time. I eat them with ketchup and a dash of worcestershire and they become great little snacks. As someone else wrote, they're the best frozen burgers I've tasted (I normally despise frozen anything). As long as you think of them as microwavable snacks and not "burgers', I think they're pretty good.

When I lived in a part of my state that didn't have a White Castle in any direction for more than 60 miles, you better believe I bought those frozen burgers and LIKED EM...lol

Well, I don't know if it qualifies as a 10 worst, but in the very old days in college, a huge student hit at local restaurants was a meal called a "Hamburger Steak Dinner." Who knows, it still may be! Anyway, basically, it was a very large portion of ground beef, griddled for the most part, and served with "2 sides" such as mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and usually dinner rolls and a salad. It typically had gravy on top unless you asked them to put it on the side for the mashed, and it was almost always cooked well done, even in the pre-fear-of-deathly-illness days. I remember it was pretty cheap, filling, and so perfect for a college student, but without a bun and condiments, it was, in my opinion, neither a steak nor a burger. I guess I objected as much to the name as I did to the well done "burger." Somehow, it just never seemed right to me.

The McDLT? Wasn't that the McD's burger that came in a two-compartment styrofoam tray, with a slice of fresh lettuce (L) and slice of fresh tomato (T) in a separate compartment from the meat, so that the lettuce and tomato stayed, well, fresh and not wilted by the heat of the burger, until ready to assemble? Although the use of so much styrofoam to package a poor little burger was grossly objectionable to me, I thought the idea was sound. McD's burgers would be infinitely better if served with unwilted lettuce and a reasonably fresh tomato slice.
