Schnitzel Burger from Schnitzel and Things Truck

"Deep-fried burgers are nothing new...but schnitz burger just has a certain ring to it, no?"

The "Schnitz Burger" (the street name for the schnitzel burger) includes: a half-pound Angus beef patty, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and ginger-scallion-garlic relish on a puffy ciabatta roll for $7. The Schnitzel & Things truck, which scoots around New York City, already offers the predictable chicken, pork, and veal cutlets, but they thought, hey, it's about time we slap some Panko bread crumbs onto ground beef and sizzle that sucker up.

You know those weddings where the bride and groom are both really attractive and lovable, and you just hope they don't birth ugly demon children? Well, in this case, they didn't! Oozing with meat juice, the monster of a burger patty (which is cooked to medium rare by default) is blanketed with crunchy fat pockets, so every time you bite into it, more moisture is released. The ciabatta, in turn, soaks all this up, reaching an almost Chinese steam bun caliber of sponginess. The whole experience is a little intense, but it's quite possibly the juiciest burger of all time. Innards shot, after the jump.

You may not be able to tell from the photos, but this burger is humassive (that is, it straddles both worlds of "huge" and "massive" and maybe another one). A normal half-pound patty might be manageable for one, but we'd advise splitting the Schnitz Burger with at least one other person of high digestive fortitude.

Deep-fried burgers are nothing new (Dyer's Burgers in Memphis, 88 Royal in Australia, and of course somebody somewhere in Scotland) but "schnitz burger" just has a certain ring to it, no?

Follow @schnitzeltruck to see where the schnitz-mobile will be stopping next. Apparently we weren't the only fans of the burger, so expect it to reappear on the menu.

The smell of schnitz burger lingered on my hands all day.

...That sounds sort of gross, but the burger was enjoyable at the time. A bomb of beef juice and fat. HOOYEAH.

So, when you deep fry a hamburger like that, is it so juicy because of the oil, or does the crust somehow prevent the juices from spilling out? Or is it a combination of the 2?

That sounds INTENSE!

Whoa that actually does look really good, and it's not the kind of thing I'd be inclined to go for either. Just... got.. hungry...

OF ALL TIME?!??!

Wow. That sounds and looks delicious.

@pastry262: crusts do not prevent juices from spilling out. Neither does searing stuff. So it's probably the frying and if whatever you are frying starts out juicy enough that it doesn't all cook away.

Possible life-changing post.

Dude, I need to try this.

This thing was ass. WTF.

Dude, I don't need to try this anymore.

@Adam and capndesign (aka the Donald Downers): Geez! Was it really that bad? Maybe I was hallucinating or just incredibly starving, but it was BREADED and DEEP-FRIED MEAT. How bad can those things be. Though I will honor the burger purist argument (that it was anatomically not an actual burger) this assessment seems a smidge harsh. And for the record, Robyn is on my side.

WOW. this internal disagreement is making me MORE interested in the Schnitz burger.

Was this thing pre-cooked before being breaded & fried or was the entirety of cooking done in the fryer?

@kwijibo: "The entire thing is breaded and cooked all at once.. No pre cooking :)" says Schnitzelator-in-chief Oleg.

just got it. it was well done and dry. seriously disappointed.
