Mozzarella Stick-Topped Burger from Red Robin

20090923-redrobin.jpg

Until November 8, burger chain Red Robin is offering the Wise Guy Burger ($9.49) topped with three fried mozzarella sticks, marinara sauce, pepperoni, banana peppers, and tomato slices. Here's a picture of the real thing—not all that different from the stylized photo. Would you try this combination of burger and appetizer? (I've already professed to being a fan of fried cheese on burgers.) [via BurgerBusiness]

That's a no from me. If I'm having a burger, it's not because I want novelty. I want melted cheese, pickle slices (thin ones), mayo and mustard. I can understand people wanting grilled onions or peppers on their burger, but fried sticks of cheese and marinara? Why?

The more things a place puts on a burger, the more I wonder what they're covering up.

Not only is that disgusting culinarily speaking, but the name "Wise Guy" is disgusting cultural-sensitivityly speaking.

@brokenbuzz: You think the name is bad...you should watch the commercial on their website (the first option in the flash menu thinger). Nothing like a bad Italian accent to make me want a burger.

Pepperoni? Spaghetti sauce? Banana peppers? What a way to ruin a good burger. DISGUSTING!!!!

@NotAmerican: It's Red Robin. They're covering up the fact that their burgers are bland and overcooked.

I have friends who love the chain, but I've never understood the appeal. Why would I wait so long in line to eat an overpriced bad burger?

I would top it with spagetti and call it done ... a masterpiece, how can you improve on this?

you bet yer sweet bippie I'm trying it. tomorrow for lunch. red robin's right down the street.

@twoshoes: Thanks for taking one for the team; let us know how it goes!

No thanks, I don't want anything deepfried on a burger, including onion rings and certainly not cheese sticks. All the other ingredients are just wrong too, pepperoni and marinara on a burger, yuk. Peppers could work, I do like jalapenos.

uggghhh i got one of these in my gut right now and i regretted it after the first bite. a friend of mine loves the veggie burgers at red robin and it was her birthday so we went, and for some reason i threw my common sense out the window and tried this monstrosity. at first glance i was like 'awesome!' but after i tasted it and it was crap, i thought about it and realized there is no way this flavor combination would ever work and i was a fool to have ever put it in my mouth. take the standard dry crappy red robin patty and then add some freeze dried mozzarella sticks that did nothing to lend any moisture to the proceedings, then slather on some marinara sauce and other random shit to try and cover up your crimes against nature, and you have a recipe for failure.

@rondertaker: Sweet jesus. Yeah that sounds pretty bad. I hope you get to eat a good burger somewhere else to make up for it.

I could do this minus the banana peppers and tomatoes! Definitely wouldn't eat anything else for the rest of the day!

This may not sound appealing but I bet the flavors might come together...pepperoni is actually not bad on a burger if you haven't tried it.

Yes the mozzarella sticks are a stretch but then you don't care about that ordering this type of burger.

There is a carryout in my hometown that serves a "Deluxe" cheesesteak w/ pepperoni and italian sausage on it and it is delicious seriously!

My last trip to a Red Robin was a major disappointment, burger and fries were both cold. I surely won't return for this crap burger.

Strangely enough I was at Red Robin last night (for my bacon cheeseburger fix) and saw the advertisement for this new "burger". Trust me - if you think it looks bad in this pic, imagine my disgust when I saw it in person - I was shocked that someone actually ordered it! I dont imagine that we will see this one featured in the RR burger hall of fame!

Christ on a pony! Where do I begin, I love the terms they use for the shit on these so called burgers. Mozzarella?!, the only thing Mozz about these things is the name! Marinara sauce?? is it really? Probably didn't use a recipe I'd recognize. Pepperoni, hmmmm.... using no doubt some awful packaged hormel or similar miracle pepperoni. I say miracle, cause it's a friggin miracle anyone believes this shit is pepperoni!

Nah... I'll save my money and buy a superball to chew on instead... and it'll be a REAL superball!

Tried it last Saturday and it was pretty good. Looked just like the promo photo too!
