One of our readers recently asked how we felt about mayo on burgers. I haven't eaten enough mayo-slathered burgers to form an opinion about it, but considering that I love mayo on pretty much anything (hot dogs = yes), I'd probably give it the thumbs up.
And there's the inspiration for this week's poll question. I limited condiments to those of the popular gooey/spreadable sort. Do you love ketchup? Hate the stuff to death? Let us know what you think! If we're missing your favorite condiment, feel free to leave a comment.
I chose none, and on a perfect burger, that's my answer. But there's plenty of wiggle room when faced with overcooked, tasteless, juiceless monsters. In those cases, pretty much anything handy that will make the thing palatable is acceptable and welcome.
I think it also depends on where you grew up? Being from Long Island no one ever heard of putting mustard or mayo on a burger??? Not even McD's or B.K. did this... Big no no... We grew up with ketchup only crowd...
I know the South is a big mayo on everything, but its kind of strange New England is more Ketchup... While PA,MD DE are more Mustard
Like I said it all depends to what you grew up with and where you grew up..
For example: the Northeast is more Hellmans mayo, Heinz ketchup while the mid west loves Miracle Whip and Hunts Ketchup....
There no right or wrong just what ever you like...
I agree with brokenbuzz; on a 'perfect' burger, none is the answer. However if the meat and/or execution is not up to par I go with mustard and maybe a thousand island type dressing if it's not overly sweet. I loved ketchup on burgers as a kid, but now find the HFCS in it is just too sweet for my taste these days.
Ketchup always. i don't despise mayo or mustard, I will have occasionally, but I feel it turns it into somethign else other than a burger. Mustard reminds me of the south and mayo makes me feel like a snob. I'm just sayin!
None on a perfect burger. Ketchup otherwise. Mayo in a pinch is okay. Mustard totally ruins a burger for me...if there's mustard on it, I'll send it back. Its not that I don't like mustard--love it on hotdogs and appropriate things, but it is not appropriate for a burger :) I guess that's a NY thing.

Your omission is sliced pickles. They come in a jar (or bottle) just like the condiments you listed

I guess you could put the sliced pickles under "other"

I prefer mayo but if I have to have ketchup instead, I like BOTH ketchup and mustard, not one or the other.
In grade school all the kids liked the ketchup/mustard combo mixed together.

mayo is practically mandatory in my opinion.

Caramelized onion and a good, smokey cheese for a perfect hamburger.
A-1 steak sauce is also fantastic.
