NYC's Burger of the Month Club (BOTM)
"BOTM is like the Bizarro World version of AHT."

Yes, we've seen the story. Thanks to everyone who emailed us the link. Would have had it up on the site earlier in the day, but AHT editor Robyn Lee is out, leaving a skeleton crew to run this here burger boat.
"What story?" some of you are asking? The one in the New York Times today about the Burger of the Month Club (BOTM, for short).
Every month on a Monday, eight New York City guys have gotten together to rate a different burger. They've been doing it since the summer of 2005. And they have a site, burgerrankings.com, which is down as of today (May 6) due to all the traffic the Times is sending its way.
Folks wanna know what AHT thinks.

- Back Forty: 190 Avenue B (12th Street), East Village, 212-388-1990
It's pretty frakkin' awesome is what. Anything that gets people trying burgers and sharing burger intel is great.
Though I do have some reservations about the way they order their burgers—always with bacon. I think putting bacon on there totally skews everything. How can you really evaluate the beef if you've got loudmouth bacon at that party, shouting everything else down?
My other immediate thought, upon looking at their top 10 list, is that it's heavily weighted toward pub-style and steakhouse burgers. I'm not a huge pub-style burger fan, and I think most steakhouses don't know how to do burgers. So their top picksdon't excite me. Still, I can appreciate a good pub burger when I run across one. Donovan's is good, but I wouldn't put it at No. 2 in the city. And I really can't believe they have Luger at No. 1.
That Shake Shack is No. 30 is crazy.
Come to think of it, BOTM is like the Bizarro World version of AHT, given that we're more into fast-food-style, thinner, griddled burgers.
But, holy shit, you have give them mad props for doing this once a week and really sticking to it. And, the article does say that not everyone in the group thinks alike:
"Certain people like a steak-type burger, certain people like something thinner," Mr. Weiss noted. "Do you rank a burger based on, 'My friend came in from out of town, where should I take him?' Versus, 'If I had all 45 burgers in front of me sitting on a table, which one would I eat?' That’s the healthy debate."
Even if their list does lean toward the pubby and steaky, it's great to see people getting out there and experiencing all the burgers they can.
How to Rank
I also admired their ranking system. The article discusses how it has morphed over the years, from a complicated points-based tabulation taking into account atmosphere, service, quality of sides, etc., to a letter-grade-based system, to, most recently, a system where the men simply place the burger at the appropriate ranking in their running list.
(For a while, I've thought of doing a ranking system on AHT that takes into account various burger components—bun, meat, cheese, cooked-to-temp., etc.—but it has always seemed too complicated, and in the end it comes down to how well everything works together, anyway.)
I can't wait until the burgerrankings.com site comes back online so we can all delve into the standings.

I was pretty surprised at their ranking of Shake Shack. I believe they said something along the lines of, "If you want atmosphere, go to Central Park. If you want a good burger, don't go to Shake Shack." Harsh...

I'm sorry but, I could never mary anyone that doesn't like the Rolling Stones.
Similarly, I won't trust NY burger advice from anyone who doesn't like the Shake Shack.
JudgeFudge at 4:24PM on 05/06/09
With all the talk about burgers in this city too bad they're mostly not very good.
thesteveroller at 4:57PM on 05/06/09
I'm with JudgeFudge on this one.
Good idea, and I'm glad they're doing it, but Luger's at #1, and the Shack at 30? C'mon!
The part that gives their mentality away is when they say that a burger doesn't even need a bun. What these guys are after is grilled chopped steak - very different from a well-balanced hamburger.
J. Kenji Lopez-Alt at 5:16PM on 05/06/09
From the audio slideshow, I'm not certain they clearly articulated their rationale for liking or disliking any of the burgers. Just saying "It's great!" is not helpful. Whatever happened to "show, don't tell"?
kathryn at 5:18PM on 05/06/09
I like their club in theory. Don't agree with their rankings or methodology. Why wouldn't you score each burger place individually rather than trying to remember how it compares to a place you last went weeks/months ago?
btw.. read some of the comments on the times website... Hilarious. The liberals are apparently very offended by a line of the guys said in the article about how vegetables are for rabbits and liberals... gotta love those ultrasensitive liberals and their wicked good sense of humor.

I have to agree with AHT that the bacon thing is just wrong. That doesn't mean that people who like bacon on burgers are wrong--everyone has different tastes. And, I understand their rationale for having all burgers the same all the time to control variables, but they have clearly introduced two non-controllable variables into the mix. The bacon is going to be different at every venue, as is the cheese. If you want to do a survey like they are doing, I would suggest that you keep the variables to a minimum. Plain burger, the buns are the variable. Medium rare, the cook is the variable. One or two condiments, and they are variables, so you could do a double tasting (no one would complain, I am sure!) where you had a plain burger on the bun offered, and then one "your way" so you would be forced to give two results--one on the burger-bun-cooking accuracy of the basic item and then one on the specific way YOU like it dressed. Readers would tend to follow reviewers on the second burger as to how their own tastes went. For example, on this site I pay more attention to reviews where the burger has my personal favorite items on them--yellow mustard, raw onion, and lettuce. I use ketchup on fries if I need to, but not on burgers. That doesn't mean I don't evaluate every review, it only means that I prefer to read reviews that mimic my personal tastes.
The guys from the BOTM should, in my opinion, go with the double tasting for reviews that have fewer variables, especially since we all know, as does AHT, that bacon is a HUGE variable in the equation. Anyway, just my 2 patties worth. I do agree that it is a club that needs to grow and prosper, however. And people on here who live in NYC--which I guess is most of you--can copy them, too!
And when you find yourselves in South Florida, come on by and we shall go Le Tub -ing or to Jack's or even this Chinese place I know that has really great burgers...no lie!

Clearly these guys are not ranking hamburgers. They are ranking bacon-cheesburgers. Why are they not clear on this issue?
Soup2Nuts at 6:05PM on 05/06/09
I think @Kenji hit the nail on the head: it seems like these guys aren't after a burger experience, just a high-quality steak-like piece of meat that happens to be on a bun. To me, to say that they could go without the bun almost implies some weird embarrassment of picking up the burger and eating it--like it's déclassé to eat a sandwich, and food really should be eaten with a knife and fork. I dunno--maybe I'm just reading into it too much.
maxcriden at 6:06PM on 05/06/09
@Soup2Nuts, you said "Clearly these guys are not ranking hamburgers. They are ranking bacon-cheesburgers. Why are they not clear on this issue?"
If it's 'Clearly' then how can you say they are not clear on the issue??
ratbuddy at 9:35PM on 05/06/09
With Shake Shack at 30th, Luger's at #1, Corner Bistro at 21st, and Primehouse - which serves a great burger, don't get me wrong - at #4, you start to understand that these guys don't know what they're talking about. Great idea, poor execution from guys who don't really think outside the "pub or steakhouse" mentality.
The stupidity of the "vegetables are for liberals" comment pretty much confirms my point. It's effing hysterical coming from Cartman, but not some fat, corporate moron from the financial district.

I'll stick to AHT. The inherent deliciousness that is the Shack Burger at 30 is simply an atrocity. Third JudgeFudge and Second Poefar.
Bacon skews results. Buns are important. Burgers are the sum of their parts, not just beef and bacon. These guys are meatheads, not burger lovers.

Slightly more appalled by Spotted Pig ranking at 41. Maybe they don't like the roqueforte, or maybe its an anti Pat La Frieda bias...

From their commentary piece on "The Perfect Burger":
"Bacon - A burger must. It should be crispy, not too thick but not too thin, and should add a slight smoky flavor without becoming the main attraction. There should also be enough of it. One slice is not enough."
Bacon is very near and dear to my heart, but certainly not a "must" on a burger! I simply don't understand... I prefer a reviewer to order a burger sans-bacon (unless it's a key component of the chef's creation that he or she doesn't truly consider optional) so as not to throw off their taste buds.
Also, it should be of note that they do have some (strong) opinions on condiments in that article, and it seems apparent they too appreciate a synergy of ingredients, and not just a slab of meat as some above comments say. However, it seems obvious the rift occurring between their club and the AHT commentariat is due to different stylistic preferences.

Well, the great thing about the burger world (that I sometimes forget but try hard to remember) is that there's room for all opinions, and, not to get all woo here, it's the place where these opinions meet and mingle that makes the burgerweb—AHT, burgerrankings.com, Burger Conquest, etc.—a great place to visit during the day. I've been in touch with the folks behind burgerrankings, and they seem like good guys. We're going to break bread (and patties) together at some point, so no big thing. Should make for some lively and spirited debate.
Adam Kuban at 3:01PM on 05/07/09
The Shake Shack verdict seemed to be motivated by what they perceived as "trendiness". Trendy or not, its damn good.
DudeLovesFood at 8:21PM on 05/07/09
It's not "CLEAR" because they don't call it a bacon cheeseburger of the month club, they call it a hamburger of the month club.
They aren't reviewing burgers, they are reviewing bacon cheeseburgers, and an occasional chopped steak.
peekpoke at 9:50PM on 05/07/09
Chris - roquefort? They wouldn't know how to spell it, let alone consider it an "acceptable" addition to a burger.
Evidently, swine - and swine alone - is an acceptable addition to a cheeseburger.
The net - net is that these guys aren't exactly culinary geniuses.

there's only one BurgerClub in my mind ;) www.burgerclub.org

I would like to point out that people from New York might prefer "pub style" burgers because that is what we grew up eating. "Balanced burgers" or what I like to call "California drive-up style" weren't popular in New York until recently. They just don't appeal to me as much as a fat juicy burger and they always leave me hungry (but not hungry enough to eat another).
adrocks at 12:05PM on 05/11/09
What bugs me here is that there are all types of burgers lumped into one list. Personally I like to break them up into fast food, pub/restaurant, and specialty. I love shake shack but I wouldn't put it into the same list as Royale (my #1 pup/restaurant burger). It's just such a different experience (Shake Shack is my #1 fast food burger, white castle #2). The rule is simple, if you can't order it medium rare, it's fast food. And on the same note, if it's got ingredients that are atypical to a burger like guac, peanut butter or redwine sauce, it's gotta go on a different list too. (Piano's Red Wine burger #1 on my specialty burger list)
And as far as judging burgers with bacon and cheese, as long as these guys are always getting it exactly how they'd like it, then why not. I personally would never order a plain burger and judge like that because i need the cheese. In the same way, I'd never be able to judge a burger covered in ketchup because I don't like ketchup on my burger. So as long as you order it just the way you like it, the same way every time, then I'd consider it valid judging.

The hamburger and fries at Clancy's Irish Pub on Second Avenue is wonderful, thick and cooked to order. Every time I visit the city I go there and indulge. A huge, flavorful burger and a great price. My once a year treat!
