Whole Foods Burger Fail in Austin

20090122-wholefoodsburger.jpgHouston Press food critic Robb Walsh tried a burger—hand-formed to order—at the Whole Foods flagship store in Austin, but was met with disappointment in the form of too much bun that was dense and tough. On the upside, the fries were good.

has to be better than the Walgreens' Double Cheeseburger Bulkie I had earlier today

As beautiful as everything looks there the food is pretty tasteless. The flagship store has a beautiful gas-fired pizza oven but the pizzas are better at any Dominos. The BBQ is unremarkable in a town filled with great mom-and-pop 'que joints. Their deli-style sandwiches are pretty good but are really expensive and the bread is pretty hard to chew through. Even the breakfast tacos don't have the yumminess that any taco cart can muster. Emphasis on too healthy? I can't speak to their many other food bars (sushi, noodle bowls, pasta, etc.) at this store but they're all out of my unemployed working class budget.
Except for the barbacoa that a guy named Poncho makes at the BBQ stand it's better to buy their house-made sausages to cook later along with some great olives, breads, and cheeses.

Around here we call it, "Whole Paycheck"

I emailed a friend in Austin about this, and apparently anyone worth their salt down there knows to go to Hut's, which is next door.

@JimMoran - Your friend knows his/her burgers. Do your shopping at Whole Foods. If it's at a high traffic time, use the parking garage there and walk down to Hut's instead of settling for a Whole Foods burger. It's worth the trip!
