The Popsie Mini Cheeeseburger at Snacky in Williamsburg

20081223-snacky-popsie1.jpg

Serious Eats intern Michele Humes recommended that we try the Popsie mini cheeseburger from Snacky, an appropriately named restaurant and bar that mostly serves small plates of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean-esque dishes. "Esque" because I'm not sure you'd go to Snacky if you were actually craving Asian food, considering that the Popsie was the best thing that fellow Serious Eater Erin and I ate out of the five dishes we ordered. However, if you're roaming the streets of Williamsburg in search of a little cheeseburger snack, it's great.

Each Popsie is made of a fat 3-ounce patty topped with a thin layer of mozzarella and spicy Kewpie mayonnaise on a squishy, mild chewy, sweet baked Chinese roll—the sort where eight are stuck together in a round loaf and you have to pull them apart. The successful use of Chinese bread in a burger reinforces my belief that restaurants should source their buns from Chinatown bakeries. The kitchen wouldn't reveal what was in the burger ("It's a secret,") but it was well seasoned with something of a salty nature. While I was disappointed by its lack of juiciness, I'd order it again if I were in the area, probably getting three at once since each burger is only $2.50.

Burgers hidden in Asian eating establishments are so far getting the thumbs up. Give me more recommendations!

@yr momz: We have an army of interns (bottom of the page); they help us with a lot of the content on Serious Eats! :)

Some of Snacky's best stuff is the stuff you're not expecting: the popsie, the kimchee hot dog, the "chinese pizza"... though I do like the miso pork w/ greens, the toasted seaweed rice wrap, kimchee pork, and the snacky fried rice is good too.

After three years of trying to get Adam to go there, I'm glad someone at SE/AHT finally did.

@SoundBitesNYC: We also like the kimchi hot dog! I'll have to try the other stuff next time. The Chinese greens were good, but the sausage and mozz sandwich and pork dumpling "buns" were really meh.

i love snacky!! popsies are great and the kimchee hotdog is addictive! also try the bun-less "mini hamburg steak" from BOZU (japanese) down the street.. its 3 burgers on a plate with mashed potatoes and some greens drizzled in this amazing dark brown ponzu sauce. i could eat it every day. (also the "spicy mclow bomb" (tuna sushi) is one of the best things ive eaten in williamsburg in the last 8 years)
