Chowhounders Discuss NYC's Most Underrated Burgers

"So much talk about burgers & so much of it focuses on the usual suspects (Corner Bistro, Shake Shack, Stand, BLT, Brgr, Royale, etc, etc), but I'm looking for the other spots. Ones that are not necessarily burger-centric or designer-burger. A good example might be The Stoned Crow. I've heard good things. My underrated pick would go to Bar 6. I had a fantastic burger there recently. What's your fave?" [Chowhound]
At the risk of stretching the scope, but entirely on-topic: My favorite burger in recent memory was one (OK, 3 total) that I cooked myself. Seriously, I don't get the mentality/obsession of scoping out the 'best' burger places in NY, paying around $10+ for a burger that is often not great, and almost always misfires on at least one cylinder. For the time it takes to haul off in search of the elusive awesome burger place, order, and wait, one can form a nice 1/2-pound patty of fresh 80-20 beef and toss it on a hot griddle, toast a roll just right, and add a hefty slab of your favorite quality cheese on top, for probably less than $3. Quick and easy to do in even the smallest of kitchens. 1 pan, 1 toaster. And it will taste as good as your favorite 'awesome' burger place, believe it or not.
I discovered this after being in the NYC mindset of "eat out, find the best burger place, gotta go when the lines are short," etc. for far too long. Shake Shack, Burger Joint, Houstons are very good; Blue 9 disappointing, Goodburger OK, but Homeburger was as good as any of them--fresher, extremely juicy, made just right, and more filling and satisfying than any of the above.
Metro Diner: Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe- Broadway at 100th St.
Still my favorite burger. Big. Perfect bun. Fresh bacon. Comes with onion rings for tossing on top. No designer meat.
@burgerboy: I like it, too. http://aht.seriouseats.com/archives/2008/02/blue-ribbon-bakery.html But I've had problems with consistent cooking. Still, it's a very good burger. I'm glad someone else feels the same way. The one thing I have trouble with there, though, is ordering the burger. I love the fried chicken and mashed potatoes and often opt for that.
hey what about NJ,,place opened in BELMAR NJ .....BOOM..... they claim to get thier blends from lafrieda meats ......they have a square burger on a ciabatta roll .....the BOOM BURGER...the greatest i`ve ever eaten....also the BISON BURGER....is second to none....also the LAMB burger is a mix of this special blend they do themselves......a must go for the ultimate experience..WWW.BOOM-BURGERS.COM
Vastly underrated? Gotta be Wollensky's Grill. They changed everything around - including 86ing those starchy, dry potato wedges. The burger is sublime - juicy and aged-steak tasting. It instantly made my Top-5.

I don't to sign in to chowhound so I'll comment here since you left them open.
My favorite NYC burger used to be the All State Cafe on 72nd. Then it was forced to close. RIP.
My new underrated fave is the Fairway cafe burger. I think you guys had a post on it recently. Very tasty!
