Dear AHT: The Nugget Diner in Reno, Nevada

Clicking in to the AHT inbox recently, we've got this bit of juicy intel. Eat up!

Dear AHT, Letters From Our ReadersI notice you have no hamburger source in Nevada....until now. In the back of one of Reno's more funky casinos, The Nugget, is a dive called Diner where they serve a thing called the Awful Awful Burger atop about two pounds of fries, all for six bucks. It's famous in the area, where occasionally it serves to make you feel like a winner. (A slice of raw onion is in there somewhere.)

Thanks for the tip, Anne! It looks like the Nugget Diner is known to many as having the best burger in Reno after looking at their Myspace page. The name "Awful Awful" comes from the shortened version of "Awful big and awful good." The restaurant is conveniently open 24 hours a day so you can get your burger on whenever you want.

Interesting -- the "awful awful" is also a milkshake-y thing at Newport Creameries across Rhode Island, with a similar etymology.

Ooh, I had forgotten that I used to put Thousand Island on my burgers when I could get fresh picked avocados.

Nice pic! Hamburger porn!

Ugh. The Awful Awful is only good at 3am when either drunk or beginning to be hungover. It's greasy and the quality is not there, it's just kitsch for sucker tourists. If I really crave a burger I go to the Washoe Grill on 4th St. and they are gorgeous. These people aren't serving drunks 24 hours a day, they care about their ingredients and it shows. Of all the things to highlight in Reno, it makes me sad that you had to pick this when there is so much better food here!

Well, I held back on Peg's Glorified Ham and Eggs, which might be the best breakfast joint in America, because you don't have to share everything.
