Shake Shack Walk-Through Tour Madness

bug-qb-shake-shack.pngThe Eater blog has its knickers in a knot about the new Shake Shack location on the Upper West Side, with not one but two posts giving readers a "walk-through" of the almost-completed space. Thanks, but call us when the burgers actually start coming off the griddle.

Oh look - another Shake Shack post. I couldn't wait another second for one...

Phhhhfhfffpppfft!

Glad you liked this post, JIH. And your enthusiasm actually gives me an idea. I'm thinking there should be a daily Shake Shack post on AHT. We'll scour the blogs and news for info to bring AHT readers, and if there's nothing, we'll just do some musing about the place. Thinking of doing the same thing with Di Fara over on the Slice blog.

I can't get enough of the shack...I'm dying to know how the lines will be for the new location. Should be interesting.

Whoops - struck a nerve. Sorry about that (really) - the point I'm making is that these two sites seem to be a bit repetitive, perhaps because they rely on the singular experiences of the local NYC editors.

Still, that does get the mind spinning - why not just do a city-specific channel, like one for NYC, LA, Denver, Chicago..as a sidebar? Apartment Therapy took this tact quite successfully. You can still push boundaries on the main channel and then keep an eye on the near-and-dear in a column.

Surely you can get burger information from around the world.. (and don't call me, yeah, got it) or enlist your friends (like Pauliegee..paaw-lie!) and critics (um, moi) to make your site better. It sure beats re-runs. I'm just sayin', y'know? ;)

JIH: Heh. Yeah. I know. There are certain hobby horses we have on AHT and Slice. And you're right, they come mostly from the fact that we're based in NYC. One of the reasons the comment above struck a nerve was that there's truth in it, and the truth always hurts a little.

But, yeah, even I am sick of Shake Shack news sometimes, and at times I have declared SS moratoriums on this site, but with the new one opening up, it's hard to declare a moratorium on it. If we do, readers think we're not in the know or whatever. I think I'll probably slow down on the coverage of SS-UWS until it actually opens.

As far as Di Fara on the Slice blog goes, if you haven't been following Slice or don't know its origin story, Di Fara factors in heavily. (Finding pizza just as awesome and sharing the info with folks is what inspired me to start Slice.) So that's one hobby horse we really go to town on that site, and I'm fairly unapologetic about that one.

You raise a good point about city-specific stuff, and it's been difficult trying to branch out. I started Slice and then AHT long before Serious Eats was even a glimmer in Ed Levine's eye. Slice was originally unrepentantly NYC-focused because it was my personal site and I live where I live. (FWIW, AHT started out with a NYC editor and an LA editor, since we recognized the need to get LA in the mix as a premier burger town.) But once Slice and AHT became a part of Serious Eats, we felt the need to broaden the horizons. There have been growing pains, naturally—as seen here.

On AHT, we're going to be ramping up our LA coverage again, and on Slice, we've got a Chicago pizza correspondent. And we do try on both those sites to put something of general interest up as well as something from NYC. (Although it seems easier to do general interest with burgers than pizza.)

I know that on Slice, the posting is a little less frequent than AHT (and certainly nowhere near Serious Eats main page level) so that when you come to the site and see that there's a Di Fara post, again, that it can get a little old. I'm trying to ramp up more coverage on Slice to address this, so bear with me on that one. And I will abort my SS Post of the Day idea (and my DFPotD on Slice). ;)
