In Videos: The First McDonald's Commercial

20081023-mcdsvid.jpg

The first McDonald's TV commercial was a pretty low-budget affair. As the site TV Squad points out, Ronald has a paper cup on his nose as part of the costume, fercryinoutloud. It's also striking for how creepy Ronald looks and sounds.

And a bit of trivia for you: TV weatherman Willard Scott was Ronald McDonald's creator. That's him in the video.

Hey kids, bet you didn't know that the early McDs didn't have drive-up window service. You had to park, walk to a window, place your order, then eat it in your car. Not even servers on skates. It was a great meeting place/hang-out for teenagers in a semi-rural area. The huge draw was that you could get a burger, fries and milkshake incredibly cheap (under 50 cents?) and it was ready, so no waiting. I used to ride my bike there (took about an hour), bring my quarter and get lunch. I think they added a few outdoor tables in some franchises, if they had room and warm weather.

I want that hat for my halloween costume!

ah, my inexorable aversion to willard scott is finally explained.

As if clowns weren't already scary enough.

That's actually Willard Scott playing Ronald in the commercial, that's why he sounds so creepy.

Ronald McDonald is pretty damn scary!

In the first Mcdonalds commercials, it's actually Willard Scott who first played Ronald!!

Maybe I should read some of the post before I add to it sorry....

@jboylan, @burgerboy: Yep! That's what I wrote at the end of the post! "And a bit of trivia for you: TV weatherman Willard Scott was Ronald McDonald's creator. That's him in the video."
