October 22 is In-N-Out's 60th anniversary, and there's been an email making the rounds talking about price rollbacks at the legendary California-based chain. But something sounded "off" about this offer. Sure enough. In-N-Out's site says:
You may be aware of a rumor about our menu prices being lowered for our anniversary on October 22nd. This rumor is untrue.
We’ve always tried to keep our prices as low as possible in order to give our customers the greatest value. One of the ways we accomplish this is by not discounting and our anniversary is no exception. We’re sorry if this rumor has caused any confusion.
Even though I was really pleased to see In-N-Outs start to sprout up around Arizona 2 or 3 years ago, I didn't actually visit one until last week. It was 10:30 at night in the middle of the week, the parking lot was full, and the line at the window was 15 cars long. I can't imagine what that place will look like on the 22nd if this rumor turns out to be true.
Nuh-uh. No way. I'm a selfish Californian (transplanted to New York) who wants In-N-Out only in California (and parts of Nevada and Arizona). I'm sorry, but no. Nuh-uh. It just wouldn't be the same... I mean, at least they don't air national ads like that tease called Sonic.
I lived in Los Angles County for 2-1/2 years in the early 90s and I was totally UNimpressed with In-N-Out. To me, they represented the excesses of the Southern California culture of the post-War period.
I much preferred another Southern California icon, Carl's, Jr. Carl's, with roots going back to the Depression, featured menu offerings that were much more restrained. (Although, in recent years, they and partner Hardee's have also succumbed to greed and are contributing the the national obesity epidemic.) As a native of the Northeast, to me a hamburger should be a charbroiled piece of beef on a bun. Period. No lettuce, no tomatoes, no special sauces, (Especially nothing nicknamed "animal style"!) Carl's Old Fashioned Star burger fit the bill nicely. I also like their chargrilled chicken breast with Anaheim pepper on a bun as an alternative to a hamburger.
JerseyWarren, are you kidding? In and Out's menu is 10% of what the Carls/Hardees offering are today. They have, what, 3 burgers on the menu with maybe another 2-3 not on the menu. If you don't want the stuff on your burger then don't ask for it. But what you'll get is a FRESH bun, meat ground at the store and fries just cut from a whole potato. At Carls, mind you I eat there too, will be a bun made earlier in the week, a frozen pattie and fries from a bag from a freezer. Carl's Six Dollar burger "monsters" pale in comparison. When I think In and Out, I think "just right", not excess.
In-N-Out rules, as far as chains go. Simplicity is the key. Also, the well-done fries are awesome.
Carl's Jr. doesn't hide the fact that they think you are too stupid to cook - witness the guacamole commercial.
They are just flat out trying to kill you with most of their food anyway. That diner-breakfast-on-a-bun thing was a good example.
