Now's the time to catch up on your knowledge of regional American fast food chains specializing in miniature burgers. Scott Beale of Laughing Squid gives a brief overview (accompanied by nice photos) of White Castle and Krystal, two chains that specialize in tiny square burgers/sliders with White Castle mostly dominating the Midwest and some of the Northeast of the U.S. and Krystal, the South.
Sliders have gotten too expensive, at the White Castle near my house they are advertising .69 cent sliders and .79 with cheese. For an extra .20 cents I can got McDonalds and get a double cheeseburger. For the amount of meat they have on them, they should cost .20 cents.

A few locations in NY and NJ does not make this a "Northeast" chain. It's a Midwest chain (from Chicago, but if one looks at it historically, Detroit is basically the home of the "slider" style burger)
never thought of it like that before... but there's something about White Castle that brings up nostalgia that double cheese at Mickeys just doesn't quite satisfy.
i do remember like 39 cent burgers at McDonalds as after school specials. man... i loved those days
Growing up in Alabama, I have never had the pleasure of a White Castle burger, but after living in Utah, I always go to Krystal when I take a trip home.

Would you believe I grew up in S. Jersey but had a Krystal slider before I had a White Castle?
My cousin is from Montgomery, AL and she introduced me to the joys of eating Krystal's by the sack during our youths.
It's been a while and I've had many White Castles since, but I always wondered if the Krystal Sliders still taste as good as I remember them.
But then again, we were young and everything tastes good when you have the munchies.

I had Krystal for the first time a few weeks ago while in Nashville. Definitely not as good as W.C.

White Castle was founded in Wichita and its headquarters are in Ohio.
I've eaten them in Minneapolis on Lake Street. Good and cheap.
