Weekend Recipe: Gilley's Texas Cafe Burgers on a Sourdough Bun

20080906-gilleys.jpg

Gilley's Texas Cafe in Branson, Missouri.

This weekend try making hamburgers and buns from scratch! These recipes for Gilley's Texas Cafe Burgers and sourdough buns are from The Texas Cowboy Cookbook by Robb Walsh. Although Gilley's Texas Cafe may be in Branson, Missouri, Walsh says that they serve an authentic Texas hamburger. If you want to make a jalapeno cheeseburger, he recommends using American cheese singles to best hold the jalapeno slices in place.

Check out AHT's Grilled interview with Robb Walsh to learn more about him. You can read his food reviews regularly at the Houston Press's food blog Eating Our Words or in their restaurant review section.

This is a burger "recipe"? Salt, pepper, and garlic powder? What's next - a recipe for grilled cheese that includes bread, butter, and cheese?

There is no such thing as "an authentic Texas hamburger." That is PR marketing crap. Texas is too large and has too many regional influences to have a signature "texas" burger, much less authentic.
