NBC 25 in Hagerstown, Maryland, has a great story about a guy who's really serious about his cheeseburgers. Justin Clarambeau of Washington County, Maryland, listened as his coworker hyped the cheeseburger at the Battleview Market in Sharpsburg, Maryland. It sounded pretty darn good to him, but there was one problem. Dude doesn't drive.
He calls the restaurant, asks them to deliver. They won't. But they struck up a deal. If he'd walk the 12 miles to the restaurant, they'd give him his cheeseburger meal free.
What the article doesn't mention is how long it took him. With average walking speed considered to be 2 to 3 mph, it must have taken him anywhere between four and six hours. After the jump, the video. But first, a question for you, serious eaters: Is there any food item you would walk 12 miles for? What is it?
OK I got a car ass, can I take a taxi. There are tons of taxis in Hagerstown ffs. Where do they find these people? And why do all the worst examples of Maryland always somehow end up on damn TV?
Lord have mercy. It's always terrifying to see my hometown mentioned in national media. C'mon, H-town, can't we get a Nobel Laureate???
And my husband wonders why I tell everyone I'm from D.C.
Really, a Battlefield Market burger? Really? Maybe the now-deceased Corsi's lasagne.... or a Krumpe's doughnut... but little else in that part of Maryland is worth a morning's walk! I would, however, walk all the way from Indiana back to Maryland for my grandmother's slippery ham pot pie!
well, at least the calories of the whole meal had already been spent by the time he got to it. Maybe next time we consider something REALLY caloric, we should walk to and back. That way we can lose weight and indulge at the same time.
This weekend I'll be going to NYC for a visit, and whenever I do I tend to do a lot of walking all over the city... close to 12 miles worth I'm sure. In the end, I'll be rewarded with a Shake Shack burger.
I'm at work, forgot my head phones, so don't get audio, so sorry if these questions don't make sense once you hear it, but I don't get it - did he call NBC ahead of time and tell them about this, or is it a re-enactment? Did he actually walk twelve miles twice for two burgers?
He should have just asked the camera van for a ride - they were all going to the same place anyway :)
The male anchor looks like he could deal with a bit more walking a few less cheeseburgers.
12 miles isn't so far to walk. I think it's nice. Frankly, I'd walk anywhere for almost any good food! Particularly, if it's free! I'd much rather hear stories like these...people being passionate about food and establishments, in return, recognizing & rewarding it...instead of-"man carjacks car and robs burger joint" Ha ha, right?
lol @ gastronomeg...
umm, anything homemade by dad but that's just me being silly. ok, let's see... 12 miles... well, like one of the above commenters alluded to, when i'm on vacation, we walk everywhere, lots... i think after a long hot walk like that, a nice cold drink... chilled white wine with some delish cheeses and serrano ham and some olives? i'm easy, i'll walk anywhere for food :)
I have to agree with several of the others. A Double-Double "Animal Style" and a side of "Animal" fries from In-N-Out. A 12 mile walk beats the seven hour drive I have to make now.
Don't know about doing anything specifically to get something, but I did ride my bike an extra 50 miles or so (total 150 miles) to get a croissant from Buchon Bakery....and damn was it good. I also regularly do a 100 mile ride in Marin specifically so I can visit the cowgirl creamery, a few bakeries I like, or Pizzeria Picco.
@kenjialtci: I thought the same thing. Figured it must have been a reenactment. Like the way Bear Grylls does his thing in Man vs. Wild. Why doesn't Clarambeau just jump in the news van? Why doesn't Grylls just eat his cameraman's Powerbar stash?
Slippery ham pot pie... heaven in a bowl... basically, a stew with thick, doughy homemade noodles. Here's the description from Wikipedia:
In the Pennsylvania Dutch region, there is a dish called "bott boi" by Deitsh-speaking natives and is mispronounced "pot pie" by English speakers in the area. This dish is sometimes referred to as "slippery noodle pot pie" to distinguish it from the true pie form of pot pie. Bott Boi is a stew, usually made of a combination of chicken, ham, beef, or wild game with square-cut egg noodles, potatoes, and a healthy stock of onion, optional celery and/or carrots, and parsley. Bouillon is sometimes used to enhance the flavor. The egg noodles are often made from scratch from flour, eggs, salt (optional) and water.
I would walk that far for a slice of pizza from my childhood pizza joint in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, without a doubt. If someone could re-create my favorite Italian restaurant in Brooklyn (closed for several years now) - Mama Turrey's - I would walk that far for their Spinach Canneloni.
I want to know if the burger was worth the walk though!
I'm in the Army and we walk 12 miles before breakfast. Usually only takes us less than 4 hours. After that though we usually go to the nearest Mege-all you can eat-buffet.

Haha...12 miles... indeed, give that man a cheeseburger!
Btw, what does he say... "It's on a **** roll too, that's awesome".
A what roll?
FastFoodCritic at 10:42PM on 08/20/08
I would walk 12 miles for Thomas Keller's lamb tenderloin.
No, I'd walk farther.
AND I'm a vegetarian.
lwalther at 10:44PM on 08/20/08
I think he said a sub roll.

Hmmm... ok, I *think* he said it's a sub roll.

@Marls Barkley -- Hah! Thank you sir. I was typing at the same time. :)
FastFoodCritic at 10:51PM on 08/20/08
@FFC: I didn't catch the roll type either. @Marls-Barkley: I think you may be right.

Not one specific item, but I sometimes think I'd be willing to walk the 2,650 miles back to CIA Napa Valley.

It won't be for a Klondike bar.
I don't think there's any food I'd walk 12 miles for these days, especially under a broiling hot summer sun.
Cassaendra at 7:33AM on 08/21/08
Living in Philly, there are many days when I would walk 12 miles for a double double at In-N-Out.
jessward at 8:16AM on 08/21/08
Shoot. I'd crawl 12 miles for a good cup of Cafe Cubano.

@jessward, FTW! I'm with you. If I had to walk 12 miles for In-N-Out, that'd mean it had put a location in or near Brooklyn. Heh.

Ironically, we walked about that far daily in Europe. We rewarded ourselves with pastries and gelato.

Couln't they have wound the guy up with: "Sorry, Bud, but we're sold out can you come back tomorrow?"

I guess this wouldn't make for a good story- but why couldn't one of his co-workers drive him there??

If I actually had to walk 12 miles for something, I'd eat something really greasy and caloric, like an authentic Philly cheesesteak.
Mmmmm cheesesteak.
