Robb Walsh on Cheeburger Cheeburger's Onion Rings

Robb Walsh, whose work we really dig here on A Hamburger Today, reports not on the burgers at Cheeburger Cheeburger, but on the onion rings. They're fried to order in peanut oil, he says.

The rings were hot and crunchy with a tart (buttermilk?) batter flavor. They weren’t as impressive as the monster onion rings you get at Del Frisco or Flemings, or as iconic as Tookie’s rings, but they were pretty good for burger chain rings.

I don't have to tell regular readers that my favorite burger go-with is a side of onion rings. And any chain that's doing them right, even if not as good as a local mom-and-pop, is a chain that's on to something. For a location near you, visit cheeburger.com/locations.asp

For me, good onion rings are not a side dish.

They are the main course! Like well made onion bhajis or onion tempura.

As for most onion rings.... I'll pass. Particularly any made with a heavy cornmeal coating. bad bad bad.

Oh man, the onion rings at Cheeburger are amazing!

I'm surprised (but glad) to see that Cheeburger is a chain restaurant. I thought all this goodness was only available in the little town I live in.

Thanks for the kind words Adam--in fact, I reviewed the cheeseburger too:

Hey Robb, be careful taking those pictures in the parking lot of the restaurant your visiting. Remember what happened last time. :)

Sadly, my experience with Cheeburger Cheeburger was not so positive. What I can say though, is that the couple of onion rings I had there were the best part of my meal. Considering that Cheeburger has grown so large so quickly, and that many people heap praise upon them, it may be that my own experience was atypical. I've got to try this place. It'll be a little trek.

My all-time favorite onion rings are at Prince's Hamburgers. I think they now cut them thinner, though.

They're hit or miss depending on the location. Sometimes the rings are crispy and delicious, other times limp and greasy.

if you're ever in cambridge, don't miss mr. bartley's burger cottage. they served the best onion rings i have ever had.

Their onion rings are lish! The shakes aren't bad either. Mmmm :)
