Dear AHT: Bacon Cheeseburgers at FOB Hammer in Iraq

A few weeks back, we noticed that a chaplain at U.S. Forward Operating Base Hammer in Iraq had mentioned Serious Eats' photo-sharing site, Photograzing, and also A Hamburger Today. We chatted a bit in the comments of his blog post, and he volunteered to send some photos of the burgers at the base. Here they are, with some words from Chaplain Andrews. —Adam

Dear AHT, Letters From Our Readers20080819-chapand.jpgThis bacon cheeseburger made at the FOB Hammer DFAC (Dining Facility) is an example of the great way the people of America are providing for our soldiers every day.

Now, of course, it has a million calories and is cooked on a wide short-order grill, but it is completely healthy for all of the stress that any American soldier needs cured. This hamburger is served on a plastic picnic plate and eaten with a side order of fresh french fries (or freedom fries, depending on your political persuasion) and an Iraqi Coke Light (Diet Coke). The cooks at the DFAC have these hamburgers ready for lunch and dinner every single day. If nothing else looks good at the DFAC, the hamburgers are always the wise choice.

Thanks for the photos, Chaplain Andrews! I'd imagine that even though it's got a million calories, you'd tend to work those off throughout the day and in that heat. Lord knows you guys and gals deserve a good burger. Thanks again, and keep safe.

Chars,
Adam

Yes...keep safe! And thank you.

I am amazed when I see pics of our troops, and they always seem to be smiling. Thanks men and women! Sending you beers to go with your burgers. Stay safe!

I'm a guy from Sweden and I wish there was a way to express my thanks and gratitude to the americans who are risking their life in Iraq and Afghanistan. I wish you guys all the best.

And it looks like you can get a pretty decent hamburger there... Even though a good hamburger can't compensate for risking one's life a good hamburger is always a good hamburger.

I hope it was delicious and satisfying! This cheeseburger was prepared by (no-bid) contractors and every time one is cooked, U.S. taxpayers are billed for three that don't exist.

but remember, children, coke light =/= diet coke. well, it's just hardcore addicts like me who notice, but still.

I second that Kaley... I miss my Coke Lights, Diet Cokes are good but just not the same.

@ justlikeaholiday
where are you from? did you move to the U.S. from somewhere?

Wonder how much Cheney-burton profits on each burger eaten?

Hooray for all our military men and women! Now that Russia is acting up we need them more than ever. I'm glad you guys can get a decent burger n fries over there.

GOD BLESS YOU GUYS!!!

THANK YOU!!!!

Thanks for all you do - God Bless!!

Hooah sir! Keep your head down and your spirits up.

Kaley - delayed reply, sorry! I studied abroad in Italy for a year and developed a serious addiction. What about you?
