Hot-Dog-Topped Hamburger

20080618-hotdoghamburger.jpg

You've got bacon burgers, cheeseburgers, burgers with fried eggs. Beets. All manner of toppings. But have you ever had a burger with a hot dog on it?!?

I didn't think so.

Apparently, this thing is available in jolly ol' England. From Katherine Steinberg's Flickr.

Marty's Hamburger stand in LA offer's a burger with a hot dog called the combo. George Motz features it in his book. I ate there last year but avoided it, being a purist:

There's a place here in northern IL that serves a hamburger with a brat sliced in half lengthwise on top of it. Pure genius. I'm pretty sure there are similar sandwiches throughout the great state of Wisconsin.

Way to crib from Slashfood.

Anyhow, this is a pretty common variation. When I was growing up -- and I'm talking 30+ years ago -- my dad would make these, and call it a "combo burger". Since Nick mentions that Marty's calls it the same thing, and I live in a whole 'nuther country, it can't be a local thing.

I've seen such burgers all over Canada and the US. Vera's, the local chain in Vancouver, BC, offers a burger with half of a beef dog on top, called "The Frank", as an example.

Way back when I was a teenager, Chili's had something called the Macho Burger, which I didn't see on the menu on my recent (disastrous) trip there. It was a burger with two split and grilled hot dogs, chili, cheese, guacamole and a host of other things I don't even remember topping it. Truly gigantic. At 14, my favorite meal anywhere, except maybe the giant burrito at The Green Burrito.

@Nick: Thanks for the tip. I'll have to re-read that entry in George's book. I think I skimmed a lot of the L.A. bits b/c there were so many there.

@worldcupfever: Hamburger-brat sounds awesome. I love brats. (I was born in Wisconsin, which might explain that.)

@jimcowling: Thanks for the info. I like the idea of combo burgers. And the intel on Vera's.

@rdominick: YOUR burger sounds the craziest of all. OMG.

Adam, I think if you're born in Wisconsin, you have an obligation to love brats. And Huber beer.

You know, if you go to the beer garden in astoria, you can recreate the brat on hamburger thing yourself...

funny thing bout this picture is the Halal symbol, which kinda flips the whole hot dog thing again ..

An unholy union.

Adam - If you ever make it to Houston, be sure to check out The Hulk at Becks Prime. It's a 1/4# hot dog, butterflied, topped with chili, and served on top of a burger.

And here on the west side in L.A., we've got The Shack and its Shack Burger. Not a hot dog, but a grilled butterflied Louisiana Hot Link. Ha!

You can also add a fried egg if you're so inclined.

In Rhode Island you have the New York system weiner that is a hot dog topped with a ground meat based sauce.
