Openings: Five Guys, Seventh Avenue Park Slope

20080623-fiveguys.jpg

Oh, before I forget (I've already forgotten to mention it here before), I just wanted to say that there's a Five Guys opening in Park Slope. George Motz tipped me to this a while ago, but I just got an admittedly unexciting picture of the under-construction front this weekend. It's in the former D'Agostino's on Seventh Avenue and 6th Street.

This is great news, as Park Slope has a dearth of good burgers. And even though Five Guys has that wrongheaded thing going on with using lean beef and cooking it to well-done, the joint somehow manages to turn out a good, juicy burger nonetheless. A welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Please. Bonnie's, Johnny Mack's, Bar Toto. I could go on and on. I refuse to get weak in the knees because some played out burger chain is opening up. What we have is a dearth of good Chinese restaurants but that's a topic for a different blog.

Bonnie's? Come on. They use frozen patties. Hooray for fresh meat and Five Guys.

come to think of it... i never eat burgers in the slope. this will be interesting for sure.

as for the dearth of Chinese restaurants in the hood, that's just how it goes. you either learn to appreciate American Chinese food or go to Chinatown

@martiner1: Touché. I'll try Toto and revisit Johnny Mack's (it's been years), but I'm with George on Bonnie's. Not only do they use frozen patties, but they char the hell out of the patty exterior so all you taste is the flavor of the grill. Not only on the burger but on the bun, too. I also think Bonnie's bun-to-burger ratio is out of whack, weighted too much toward bread. But, like I said, I'll give Toto a try and hit up Johnny Mack's again.

@foodinmouth: Yeah. The Chinese places in the Slope are all pretty meh. Someone—not me—should start a Chinese food blog. Come to think of it, Jenny 8. Lee keeps a pretty good Chinese food blog.

I've tried the Five Guys more than a couple times at the Montague St. branch, and I've yet to have an "It" moment. What diff. does fresh meat make if it's cooked to death? A great test of a burger is to eat it plain, just the bun and maybe a little mustard (Ketchup? - grow up.). Shake Shack and Corner Bistro, to name two, have delicious plain burgers. Five Guys' plain burger literally reminded me of a Yankee Stadium concession, inferior to McDonald's.

I agree if it is cooked to death & Five Guys is, then what's the whoop. Shake Shack is a thin burger, but can be cooked any way you want. A real Cal style burger, but the fries are not that bad, as a matter of fact for a frozen frie pretty good.

I'm a PSer and agree re Johhny Mack's but also agree with Adam on Bonnie's - it definitely is way over-charred and tastes exactly like whatever is on the grill top. Have to try Bar Toto - haven't been.

But the best burger in PS is at Stone Park Cafe - Bar None!
