Iron Man's Tony Stark Is a Genius, But Not When It Comes to Burgers

20080527-tonystark.jpg

Yeah, I know I'm a couple weeks late to the Iron Man train here. So sue me. I've been working on other projects, so I just got around to seeing this kick-ass flick over the weekend.

Anyway, as a lot of you emailed me about, billionaire weapons magnate Tony Stark, after three months in evil-doer captivity, asks for a cheeseburger as his first meal back in the good ol' U.S. of A. And where does his driver grab it from?

Burger King.

Is Tony Starck a mechanical genius? Yes.

Is he a burger genius? No.

With so many great burgers to choose from in the L.A. area, I'm outraged that he'd pick a lame chain burger. But of course Father's Office, the Apple Pan, Irv's, In-N-Out, and all the other great places in the area don't have the movie tie-in bucks to throw around.

Matt Selman at Time magazine's Nerd World blog sums it up better than I can with this great Iron Man "deleted" scene.

And Obadiah Stane ain't too savvy with New York pizza, either.

Well...in fairnes to the character, I don't think Tony Stark/Iron Man/Robert Downy Jr. had any say on what burger he would be eating. ;P

Two words...

"Product Placement"

I am Sure they Paid for that!

Phauxtoe: I'm aware of product placement. Obvs that's what's going on here. That's why I said, "But of course Father's Office, the Apple Pan, Irv's, In-N-Out, and all the other great places in the area don't have the movie tie-in bucks to throw around."

Sadly, for many people, there's too often a disconnect between a great burger worthy of celebrating freedom with and a Burger King burger. That scene likely didn't phase a lot of people.

Okay this probably makes me uber nerd, but did anyone notice 1- he takes one bite of the burger and then stops eating (we know why) and 2- it irked me greatly that he says he wants a cheeseburger from Burger King. Not just because it's BK but because they aren't known for cheeseburgers but for Whoppers, and even if you put cheese on a Whopper, it ain't a cheeseburger. Come on. It was bullsh*t, scuse my French (and if memory serves - I saw the movie maybe 2 weeks ago now - the scene where you actually see him eating the cheeseburger, it doesn't look like a cheeseburger OR a Whopper).

I hate food mistakes in movies.

@feisty: What I think I noticed was that he actually ate two burgers. I think one he started chomping as he left the car and went to the news conference, and then I think he started another as he sat down, unwrapping it and blabbing. Or maybe it was only one burger. Maybe it was a continuity issue. I don't know. Either way, I don't remember him eating much of the burger on screen, either.

Agreed about the Whopper vs. "cheeseburger."

Adam, Sorry!
I think my phone rang and I missed that part.

I will say one thing. If I am out on the road without choice, I will eat at BK but Never will I eat at McDs.

No problemo, Phauxtoe! It is buried a bit. I'd rather do BK than McD when on the road, too. But it's so rare that I'm on the road these days that when I am, it's usually vacation, and then I plan some eating at worthwhile joints.

Way to go on the Father's Office comment...
