Openings: Black Iron Burger Shop

20080427-blackiron.jpg

Says Nick from Beef Aficionado, who snapped the photo above: "Looks like a new burger spot called Black Iron Burger Shop will be opening in June on 5th Street between avenues A and B. Very classic looking."

I'm just guessing here, but I'm going to guess that the burgers here will be grilled. How can you name a place that and not grill them?

The flip side of openings is closings, and a once proud landmark chain appears to be on its last legs. The Little Tavern chain (Buy 'em by the bag!) with its distinctive green roofed architectural style and tiny "slider" style burgers that somehow stood apart from better known competitors is down to one last outlet, in Dundalk MD, just outside of Baltimore. The Baltimore Sun has a story here,
with some nice photos here. I'll spare you the teary memories of my late night dining because I need to head out quickly to Holabird Ave. to grab a bag.

That's cast iron mounted on the facade, and when I stopped by on Saturday, some big iron was parked out front, too:

Your guess is good, Adam: "Black iron" refers to the cooking surface, the fellow in the black shirt told me. No burgers till June, he added, because it's a major piece of iron and can't be rushed.

Next question: Would they serve veggie burgers? Hmm..

Veggie burgers ≠ burgers!
