The Evolution of the Big Mac?

20080208-bigmacolution.jpgBack story: McDonald's Japan recently released a four-patty Big Mac, which is surprising—I mean, you'd think McDonald's U.S.A. would have come up with this first. Anyway, bloggers in the Land of the Rising Sun then went out and took pictures of the thing, including Takeshi Fukuda, who imagined its eventual evolution there.

To make sense of it all, the blog Calorie Lab put together this little chart (right) of Takeshi's photo series, complete with hypothetical "Mac" names.

I think this is all part of McDonald's evil plan to make Japanese people as fat as Americans so we don't feel as bad.

Four (four) all (all) beef (beef) patties!

I know! I'm surprised this happened in Japan, of all places. When I visited and tried McD's there, the portions seemed smaller to fit in with local customs. Who knows. It would be a shame if everyone started eating crap in the same crazy amounts as we do in the U.S.

Lauren: You forgot the double helping of special sauce, lettuce, cheese. And pickles, onions. On (large) a sesame seed bun, of course.

Hold on a second. There are chopsticks in the background of all those pictures. Awesome.

Adam: I didn't forget them, I got hungry and went to get something to eat before I was done.

Umm... that's a Double Big Mac. We've had those in Canada for ages (at least ten years, if not longer). You really don't have them in the states?

MichaelN: Seriously. We don't have Double Macs in the States! The world can call our fat asses out on Hardee's Monster Thickburgers, supersized meals, and deep-fried bacon cheeseburgers, but this is ONE thing you can't pin on the ugly Americans! ;) (Except maybe for the fact that McD's is a U.S.-based company.)

OK. We do have the Double Quarter Pounder, which, you could argue, is roughly equivalent to a Double Mac. But I'm going to pretend that argument doesn't exist.

These are goooood. We had them here in the UK for a limited time, sold as 'Mega Macs'. Just don't supersize your fries and shake as well.

When I worked at McDonald's for several years (mid-1990s) we most definitely served a Double Big Mac for a time, it was qute popular for a while. But was quickly eclipsed by the Double Quarter Pounder.

The pre-cooked meat for a Double Big Mac was only 6.4 ounces, instead of the 8 ounces for a Double Quarter Pounder.

We also briefly served the Mega Mac, made with Quarter Pounder meat instead of the smaller meat, that lasted about a month or so, one fo the "Burger of the Month" crazes that included the McJordan, McRib, and various other combinations of meat, bacon, and cheese with nifty names.

OMG! The MCJORDAN! I forgot about that. Someone needs to start a McMuseum for all the wacky stuff they come up with.

Actually this was test marketed in the mid-west under the name "Super Mac" For some reason they never followed through with it?

The Best Burger of the month that I loved was The Chedder Melt!! Loved the cheese sauce and the rye like bun.

Hey, I remember the Double Big Mac as well. I'll see if I can look through my pre-digital photos for a pic.
