Whaddaya know? My mom's all of a sudden become a font of food tips. Earlier this week with news about the first pizza cone franchise in the U.S. and now this ...

Jess & Jim's: 517 East 135th Street, Kansas City MO 64145 (Martin City; map)
Adam,
I stopped off at the gas station in Martin City today, though that in itself is not newsworthy. But imagine my surprise when there at the gas pump was local DJ Randy Miller, holding a plate with a steakburger, talking to a young guy filling his tank, as a cameraman shot the encounter. My first thought was that it was a promo for Sonic, since it's right next door. But, after asking a girl who was with them, she said they were filming a commercial for Jess & Jim's. I never knew they had steakburgers on the menu!
I was curious so I checked their website and, sure enough, there they are on the lunch menu. Who knew? When anyone here in Kansas City mentions Jess & Jim's, it's always because of their mouthwatering steaks, deliciously done to perfection. Seems the little old hamburger has become important enough to earn its own commercial from this well-established steakhouse. And, by the looks of it, it just might be worth checking it out.
Next time you get back home, we'll put this on the "to eat" list. If there are any Kansas Citians who have eaten Jess & Jim's steakburgers, comments please ...
Thanks, Mom!
If you've been reading A Hamburger Today, you'll notice that this type of thing has been a nationwide trend for the last couple years—the "elevated" or "fancy-pants" burger. Either steakhouses or top-rank chefs focusing on the lowly hamburger. (Not that we at AHT ever thought the hamburger was lowly to begin with.)
It'll be fun to see if Jess & Jim's steakburger lives up to the steaks there. In general, it's the rare steakhouse that gets its burger right. But if anywhere can, I'd put money on a K.C.-based joint like J&J.
Whatever the outcome, at $5.95 for a cheeseburger with fries, it's not going to set us back that much.
Sin-sear-ly,
Adam
