Eat My Pix: White Rose System

20071213-whiterose01.jpg

Dear AHT, Letters From Our Readers

These were taken at White Rose System in Highland Park, New Jersey, over the weekend.

Great burger often referred to as an oversize White Castle burger because of the cooked chopped onions and similar roll. VERY TASTY!

Dear Rob,
Thanks for the pix! Those look great, and I've heard lots of good stuff about White Rose.

i was a White Rose late night regular in the late 60s to mid 70s...quite a scene...great pictures...the burgers & fries look like they haven't changed & still taste good

The onion looks intertwined with the meat and the the whole thing looks delicious. I have got to try one of those.

Great pictures as well.

So much for a salad today,

BWM

Looks great at first look but then notice...cheese not melted, of the two tomato slices, one is a bottom or a top. Fine at home but not if your are selling it. Waaaaay too much lettuce..unless those are the cooked onions, but then, I have never seen cooked onions that looked like coleslaw. The bun however, looks great!! Gimme' just the meat and THAT bun and cheese and go from there. What pickles? Whole 'nother story there. Dill good. Sweet bad. But that's my own biased opinion. Judging from the pic...it has promise but not there yet to me.
Cheers, TB.

This is trus "fast food".......you can ask for a cheeseburger and fries and be outa there in less than a minute! These are great burgers for after the bar

look like white manna w/ lettuce and tomato. Neither of which belong on a manna burger. grilled onions and pickles...that's it.

There is nothing like a White Rose burger. I grew up in Edison and have been eating them since the sixties. I live down the shore now but whenever I'm in the area I stop by. It used to be managed by the father of a schoolmate of mine. The fries in the waxed paper bag are great. Too bad the don't use the old wooden sticks like they used to. The california cheeseburger is the best. FYI the old brick building to the left was the original White Rose during the sixties. There used to be one in Linden also, that is gone. I think there still is one in Roselle. When I'm not up in Central Jersey the best burgers are at the Windmill multiple locations, Belmar, Brick, Long Branch, etc. Excellent fire grilled burgers and rib eye cheese steak sandwiches. Get the burgers on a hard roll though, the regular rolls aren't that great. Of course, honorable mention to any White Castle, or the White Diamond in Clark, all good greasy spoons. Next time I go south I need to check out Krystal, appear to be a lockout.

The Linden location, on Elizabeth Ave, is still there, going strong, as is the Roselle location.  Love, love, love the Cali cheeseburgers!  After having witnessed the miracle myself years ago, I still bring people there to watch the counter people practically have everything bagged the second you finish ordering.Anyone remember that in the early 80's, the sign outside the Highland Park location said "White Rose Cheeseburges"?

White Rose only puts Lettuce and Tomatoes on it if you order the Cali burger. You can get just pickles and onions on it if you order the normal burger. Both a great burgers. It's a notch below the Manna though.

I still consider the Cali-Cheese from White Rose System the best burger ever! I used to go when I was in college in the 80's, and I still rave about it to my friends who haven't been there, and reminisce with those who have/
