Where's the Beef: Virginia
Digging into the A Hamburger Today mailbag finds this awesome piece of correspondence from Drew H. in Virginia. He writes:
Dear AHT,
I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed the site over the last few years. It's been wonderful—I've used it for everything from finding a tasty burger spot on the road to parsing the language that you experts use to describe the ultimate cheeseburger. Many thanks.
I did notice that you do not have a Virginia heading. Speaking for myself, and undoubtedly all of your Virginia fans, I would enjoy seeing AHT include the Commonwealth on the site. I've dined at all of the places below with the exception of Burger Boys.
Mike’s Grill
Legendary local establishment serving beef ground on the premises, with a special blend of spices. Cheeseburgers are always served upside down on the plate, hot delicious fries and other college town fare. On the Virginia burger pilgrimage without a doubt. 418 N. Main Street, Blacksburg VA 24060; 540-951-7391White Spot Restaurant
For more than 50 years a UVA tradition The “Gus Burger” is a traditional classic topped with a fried egg. If you like that, you have to try the “Motor Burger” a monster double-double topped with a fried egg and a stack of grilled ham slices. One of five places hailed as must stops on the Virginia burger pilgrimage. 1407 University Avenue, Charlottesville VA 22903 (at UVA Corner); 434-295-9899Kenney’s
Established in the 1950’s and a local institution serving hamburgers made to order w/ Kenney’s secret sauce. The simple cb, the fried chicken, crinkle cut fries and shakes are to die for. Stand in line on a Fall weekend with VMI cadets and Washington & Lee law students. A stop on the Virginia burger pilgrimage. 635 Waddell Street, Lexington VA 24450 (there's also a Buena Vista location); 540-463-5730Texas Inn
A been there forever, Lynchburg landmark for burgers, chili and hot dogs, the “Cheesy Western Burger” w/ a fried egg, gooey cheese and peppers is the choice of many. 422 Main Street, Lynchburg VA 24504; 434-846-3823Burger Boys
Opened in 2003, this family restaurant has been quickly acknowledged for one of the best hamburgers in the Commonwealth. Burger Boys should be called the “Burger Girl” as it’s owned by an enterprising, community leader named Sandra Hardeman. 13460 Dumfries Road, Manassas VA 20112Tammy and Johnny’s
Traditional burgers made to order, fried chicken and seafood in an old-time highway side restaurant catering to truckers, travelers and locals; the Tammy or Johnny burgers top the menu. Lankford Highway, Melfa VA 23410; 757-787-1122Pat’s Café
Inspired by the legendary Lendy’s Drive-Ins in the 1950s with several locations in Virginia, Pat’s serves burgers and ham sandwiches to die for, say many. The “Buddy Boy” is a double-double with Pat’s own secret sauce (a notable condiment addition to the traditional hamburger in Virginia); platters add fries and homemade coleslaw; great with O rings and strawberry pie. Part of the Virginia burger pilgrimage 3526 Shenandoah Avenue NW, Roanoke VA 24017; 540-981-1193Carytown Burgers

WOW! I'm so excited to see this, but there is one major flaw. Not to bash The White Spot (I've had many a late night drunken burgers there), but the best burger in Charlottesville by far is at Riverside Lunch. I feel qualified to make this statement for a number of reasons: 1. I love burgers. 2. I lived in Charlottesville from birth until 23. 3. I now live in NYC and go to all of the burger joints suggested on this site and I still can't find one to match. The White Spot is good and there is no better end to a night out then the Gus Burger, but let's face it - they use store formed crap patties that are always over cooked and really only taste good when you are drunk. Riverside Lunch is an oldschoolish burger joint where the Charlottesville townsfolk go for great burgers, really good fries, and ice cold bud longnecks. It is off the beaten path in Charlottesville and hard to find if you don't already know about it. Burger Lovers if you are ever in Charlottesville, Va this is the burger to try.

Thanks for the info on Riverside Lunch, dlbracey! I'm happy to have one more VA place on the site.

I was very happy to see this post. I went to school in Blacksburg and Mike's is an institution. Yum!
Wright's Dairy Rite introduced their "SuperBurger" in 1952-- a burger consisting of two patties, american cheese, shredded lettuce and their special sauce, all served on a triple decker bun.
McDonalds introduced the BigMac in 1968 (invented in 1967).
Conspiracy theory? :-)
Check out their menu:

I look forward to trying more places on this list! Thanks!

I vouch for Mike's burger's they are special. What no one will tell you about, and I'll probably be looked at suspiciously if i move back.... is Hank's Drive -in in Radford.... It is where burger-meisters who know their burgers go, well if Hank is on duty and they are open. It is just a shack with a picnic table out front on the right hand side of the road as you head into radford. Unless you talk to locals and older people, you won't ever hear about Hanks, but it is a very nice burger in a brown paper bag.

Let's not forget about two Norfolk hamburger stalwarts: Kelly's (arguably the best hamburger in Hampton Roads, and Doumars, one of the best nostalgic drive-ins in the country.

I'm gonna have to 2nd Riverside...the first time i went there my dad set me up on the bar in my infant seat!!
been going there weekly ever since. i still miss the old spot that was tiny and grease stained, but the new spot serves up the same great burgers and they have the coldest beer and coke in a glass bottle around.

That's a good starte on a list, but this is the birthplace of the awesome 5 Guys Hamburger establishment (unfortunately it doesn't look like the 5 Guys guys have the same franchisal OCD that McDonald's Kroc had to keeping the food consistent from franchise to franchise).
There's also Elavation Burger in Falls Church which is a 5 Guy wanna-be, but with their higher prices and smaller fare (as well as french fries fried in a "healthier" olive oil) they have a long way to go.

I have been an avid fan of Riverside Lunch in Charlottesville for years. By far, they have the best "good ole fashion" hamburger in VA. It slipped some when they moved to their current location and it is more of a family spot now, but the burgers are still tops, the french fries are great and the beer is ice cold.
I have enjoyed most of the other burger places mentioned, except Kenney's in Lexington. I have to wonder if this is the original Kenney Burger that had a burger spot in Charlottesville and Waynesboro that are no longer there. I am going to have to check them out.
