A Durham Burger Stand, Then and Now

20070717durham.jpg

Dear AHT,

Thought you might be curious to know that the building pictured on your site in this post, taken by Jack Delano in Durham, North Carolina, in 1940, is still standing. You can see its current condition here on my site.

Unfortunately, our county commissioners are planning to tear it down for a surface parking lot.

Cheers,
G. K.

Dear G. K.,

Ain't that how it always goes? They pave (cheeseburgers in) paradise to put up a parking lot. Sorry to hear that your county commissioners are tearing down historic structures.

Sin-sear-ly,
Adam

drove past here Monday night, a little bit lost, on my way to Cook-Out for a (what I think was) a much deserved Cook-Out cheeseburger after playing a rock show. It was past 1 AM on a Monday and there was a 6 car line on both sides (Cook-Outs feature 2 sided drive-throughs and a walk up window) but my severely well-done burger (so bad I couldn't finish it, doesn't happen often, but when it does, so sad) was probably a hint I shouldn't be eating a cheeseburger so late on a work night.

I wish this place, George's Grill, was still open. I bet they would have made me a nice burger.

Endangered Durham blog is an incredible resource of information and inspiration to save some of our historic architecture. The rock show was in a community/volunteer run free-space called Bull City Headquarters that was itself scheduled for demolition barely a year ago before folks got together to rescue it. A good reminder to see Durham while we can before the only way is on that blog, or AHT. I mean we all need available parking, especially for city government offices that already have ample parking. I want another cheesburger,

I'f they still served burgers they wouldn't be torn down. What a beautiful building. What a shame. Save the American Hamburger.
