Mystery Burger Solved: Hildebrandt's

20070323CutletsHildebrandts.jpg

AHT reader Dane, who was the first to comment, said he knew where this was but didn't live in the area and didn't want to ruin the contest (whose "prize" was questionable, anyway) for people who did.

But he cracked: "I can't take it anymore. It's Hildebrandt's in Williston Park."

Cutlets confirms it with the photo above.

Sorry, folks: There will be no "prize."

Have you been there Adam ?

Everyone from the neighborhood should have been disqualified. Dane ruined the fun for everybody. No hamburger with Mr. Cutlets for him!

Chris: I haven't been there. I'm really bad and rarely travel outside NYC. Not even to LI, which is easy. Perhaps Mr. Cutlets will ferry me out there in his Cutletsmobile.

You're right - one of the best places BY FAR for a nice, relaxed meal. Get there for the Easter chocolates this time of year .... and yes, the burger/fries/sundae are some of the best I've ever had. fyi the restaurant is about a block away from the East Williston LIRR station. Regular service. And if I remember it's closed Sundays/Mondays.

"best burger in the new york area"? seriously? I mean, i like hildebrandt's a lot (I mean a LOT) and the burger is very good, but "best in the new york area"? "better than shake shack"? what are you smoking? on the other hand, hildebrandt's makes a killer lasagne (although i'm not sure it would pass any tests for "authenticity" but man it is delicious), and what seriously may be the greatest hot fudge in the universe.

hildebrandts blows the shake shack out of the water. not only are the burgers much better but the shakes at hildebrandts are on a totally different level. not matter what danny myers tries he can't replicate true OLD SCHOOL..

Mr Cutlets, how do you find these joints? Are you from LI?Do you have directions to this place?

Which butcher do they use?

Ceriello's. They grind an 80/20 mix of sirloin and added fat. I like it better than the chuck / brisket / sirloin mix I believe they are using at the Shake Shack. On the other hand, Pat LaFrieda's mix for Stand, when it was 70/30, was the best in the city. Zak Pelaccio told me that the burger at 5 Ninth is 65/35, which seems too good to be true....

Yeah after looking at the LIRR map/schedule this seems a bit daunting of a trip. (I mean is there anything to do in Williston Park?)

Isn't anyone curious what the f*ck is on that burger. Is it squid? wieners? severed fingers? For such a great burger it looks a little "horror show" in the picture if you know what I mean . . .

I went on saturday(closed on sunday) and you were right, the bugers are great!! great beef flavor and super juicy. i had a milkshake that was the best i ever had.... ps: thats bacon on the burger smart guy

I've been going here for years; I'm suprised that I don't remember the burger. Great place though; they do Hot Fudge Sundaes the right way: Homemade Ice Cream, whipped cream in a metal dish, hot fudge on the side in a tiny metal pitcher.

Made an hour long drive to have the burger. My take on it: Go with the 4oz instead of the 8oz. The 8oz bun is too large and chewy and with the size of the patty they could not get it medium rare. My wife had the 4oz and the bun is nice and soft and lets you taste the meaty flavor.

Vanilla shake was excellent!

Thanks for the intel, eastcoastvb! We're planning a trip out there at some point soon, and this info will come in handy. Chars!
