[Five Guys] N.Y.C. prognosis: High-five! The first city location will open in College Point, Queens, next month, with stores to follow in Manhattan within two years.
[Fatburger] N.Y.C. prognosis: Fatties rejoice! The chain plans to open three stores in Manhattan in the next 12 months. One in Greenwich Village, one in Harlem and one in Midtown. Rapper Pharrell Williams (inset) is a partner in the venture.
The big question is whether these companies, as good as they are elsewhere, can maintain their high quality in New York City. With a few exceptions, fast food chains in the Big Apple tend to devolve to dirtiness and surliness pretty quickly.
I've always found five guys to be not all that good. The one in DC is good just because it doesn't have any competition. There is one in my hometown, Charlottesville, and there are two or three other burgers there that are better. It isn't going to hold a candle to shakeshack, royale, island burger, or any other good NYC burgers.
I think Five Guys will hold up around here. There's one around the corner from my Mom's in Alexandria, VA and I wouldn't say it's as good as Shake Shack or Burger Joint, it's not that far behind (better than Island Burger for sure).
Five Guys breed quick. Their franchise policy mandates you buy at least 5 stores, so, if you have one now, you'll probably have a ton in a week. Also, my mum is in Jacksonville, FL, and when they opened there, she said they were just as good as the ones in DC.
I've been to the Fat in Jersey City twice... and must say that i was disappointed... frozen patty! Too many better burgers in nYc for it to thrive. Bring on Five Guys though.

A Fatburger already exists right off the PATH train at Exchange Place in Jersey City, NJ. No surprise that most New Yorkers are unaware of it.
