Dear AHT: Brazil Makes the Best Burger

Here's a nice reader email from São Paulo, Brazil:

It's hard to say, but the best burger I ever ate was not in the U.S.. It was in São Paulo, in a place called St. Louis (burgers and dogs). There is no Shake Shack or Burger Joint or Le tub for them. Just terrific ground sirloin, melted real cheese, toasted bun, cucumber relish, heirloom tomato slices, pickled onions, and a touch of jalapeño. It's worth the airway ticket. The worst part is that they don't have restaurants in U.S. I add a photo of the burger I ate [left]. —L. Cintra (a Boston chef cooking in Brazil)

Thanks, Mr. Cintra! That's a beautiful photo. Very iconic.

This guy says the best burger in the world is in S o Paulo, too, but at The Fifties: http://www.flickr.com/photos/brasileiro/sets/72057594062702712/

Ooh that picture makes me want a burger bad. Thankfully I'm going to Jackson Hole tonight (my first time, expect a review up tomorrow sometime)... have to check to see what your review on the place was :)

Any idea where St. Louis is exactly? A Google search didn't turn it up... nor did a search or guiasp.com.br. Probably the best sandwich I had was a steak sandwich at one of the Rodoservs, that are by the side of the road towards Botucatu (in the state of Sao Paulo).

I just saw the first ever chain restaurant burger commercial that actually makes me want to go out and try it: Wendy's new jalapeno burger? Has anyone tried this?

No way, St. Louis burgers are much better then those from The Fifties, biggining from the the meat weight, Fifties burgers looks like paper sheets. St. Louis Burgers is located at Rua Batataes (Jardins) in S o Paulo, I don't know the number.

Mr Cintra's comment is a bit ludicrous, if you consider that he is THE OWNER of St. Louis.....

I wonder how insecure must a "chef" be in order to comment about his restaurant posing as an impartial customer?
