Mr. Cutlets (aka Josh Ozersky) is the man you turn to when you're in Manhattan and you need to know where the beef is. Why? Well, he's written the book on it. Meat Me in Manhattan, a tome whose slimness belies its weighty contents, is the consummate guide to carnivory in New York City's most hustlin' of boroughs. Here, he gives his Top 10 in the Big Apple and his Top 7 nationwide. Sink your teeth in. —The Management
White Castle? White Castle? Please! There's not enough meat there to taste, and steaming what little there is in onion juice instead of grilling it is hardly the way to bring out what little flavor their low quality meat has. What next? Macdonald's shakes listed in your Top 10?
because In&Out isn't national... if it was I'd be eating them all the time here in NYC. In&Out is only West Coast... closest I can get them is when I'm in Las Vegas.
I'm the guy who asked about the absence of In n Out on Mr Cutlet's list. The question becomes what defines "national?" Not all of the chains listed operate in all 50 states, maybe none operate in all 50. Steak and Shake is regional. White Castle is regional. I suggest his "national" list criteria was that the chain operates in multiple states. In n Out does that. And even tho I'm on the west coast they aren't in my state either so I'm just as SOL as you back east. BTW, I like the little pop up window for comments!
Meghan: Yes. White Castle still has locations in Saint Louis, but it really isn't national. It started in the 1920s in Wichita, Kansas, expanded eastward, and eventually relocated its corporate HQ to Columbus, Ohio -- dealing my homestate of Kansas a big slap in the face. The move to Columbus, however, was expedient for the company, as C-bus was essentially the geographical center of the White Castle "system" at the time. As other burger chains wrested mouths from the Castle, the slider chain slowly retreated, pulling out of Kansas and some of its more western regions. As of today, it doesn't go farther west than, say, Saint Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis. DC: Yeah. As I said before, Mr. Cutlets has revised his list -- I just have to post the new one here. I think it addresses the regional vs. national issue. If it doesn't, I'll rename his list or something. And thanks for the props on the pop-up comments. I had to switch to HaloScan after getting some serious comment-spam attacks on the built-in commenting system. This HaloScan stuff seems lighter, faster, and easier so far.
everytime I have an hour to kill before I board a plane home from LA to NY
I try try try IN & Out Burger. After 5 times I am still somewhat baffled as to
why these are considered special? No taste, too much mayo, wonderbready roll,
no textures..even without the mayo-special sauce...yawn..
So based on the recent interview with Josh, has Veselka usurped Shake Shack as the top spot?
I wonder if Ozersky has tried Brooklyn Diner's Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe, a $16 beast of a burger platter that satisfies everything a burger lover could want. It's NYC Food Guy's top burger in NY.

White Castle IS national, as I grew up eating it in St. Louis. What I really miss is Steak n Shake...I wish they would open one in NYC.

Lots of Stuff does not a great Burger make!
