A Hamburger Today

Belated Congrats, Tigers & Strawberries

Posted by Adam Kuban, February 10, 2006

Last month, the results of the 2005 Food Blog Awards were announced. AHT/Slice volunteered to provide a prize for one of the categories. We wanted to give back, since Slice won last year's Best Theme Food Blog award.

We sponsored the Best Post category, which went to "Meat Comes from Animals: Deal with It or Eat Veggies" by Barbara Fisher of Tigers & Strawberries. How fortuitous! Barbara comes from a family with a slaughterhouse/butcher-shop background and has this to say:

People have forgotten, that in order for us to eat a hamburger, a cow dies. Most Americans live sheltered lives where the fact that in order for us to celebrate Independence Day with fried chicken and barbequed ribs, chickens and hogs must die.

This is utterly alien to my experience. I grew up with those aformentioned pictures of the meat market, framed and displayed proudly in our livingroom. Furthermore, with my own hands, I helped butcher steers, hogs and chickens, and have cleaned countless fish. From the time that I was strong enough, I helped my grandparents produce the meat our entire family ate. And I never thought that there was anything odd about it.

20060210Puffin.jpgSo what did Barbara win? Well, we originally offered her a copy of Larousse Gastronomique, but she already had one. Scratch! Then we hit upon offering Barbara her choice from among the cool mid-century vintage reproduction prints at Plan59, thinking the one pictured above would be a shoo-in. But, in the end Ms. Fisher chose a print that we have to agree is far more wicked (left), even if it doesn't depict this site's favorite food.

Congratulations, Barbara!
