Today he provides AHT with its first Mexican burger review. For a video review and additional suggestions on what to do in downtown Playa Del Carmen, visit Burger Conquest.

A trip to Mexico hardly seems like the time to be seeking out delicious burgers, but I had heard so many great things about Wicky's that I was willing to break my eating plan of "tacos, followed by more tacos." Positioned on the dock side of the Ecanto Resorts, smack dab right in the middle of downtown Playa Del Carmen. It's not hard to find; when you get to Calle 10 Norte while walking along Avenida 5, turn towards the beach and walk until you hit the sand. Wicky's will be on your right.
What was I doing in Playa Del Carmen to begin with? My wife and I had flown down to join in the festivities of our friends Karl and Julie's wedding. Playa is a great spot to vacation if you enjoy doing the resort thing. It's reasonably priced, the weather is great, the sand is soft, the people are extremely friendly and accommodating, and most importantly, there is a ton of great food. Most people never leave their resorts and miss out on interesting excursions to Mayan Ruins, cenotes (sink holes), jungle adventures, wildlife parks, all forms of water sport and play, and the beauty that is Downtown Playa Del Carmen. We stayed at Dreams Riviera Cancun and loved it, but definitely made sure to spend an afternoon in Downtown Playa.
Taking a taxi from our resort, we had the cabbie drop us off right in front of Wicky's, an upscale restaurant known for its steaks and burgers. Only about a year old, Wicky's serves Certified Angus Beef that they import fresh from the United States. Wicky's seafood options are caught in the local Caribbean waters. Upon arrival we met general manager Damon Gehrke, who told us the story of how he and a bunch of friends decided to open a steakhouse à la Del Frisco's in Playa Del Carmen while still living in Colorado.
Despite the positive reviews that lead me to Wicky's, my expectations were pretty low. I just couldn't believe there was an amazing burger located in Playa Del Carmen. Be sure when ordering to ask for the "bar menu" as it has several burger choices not listed on the regular lunch and dinner menus.
I WAS WRONG!!
Book a flight immediately because this burger is worth the travel, airfare, hotels, taxis, and time. Served with the most pristine presentation, the burger once put together stacks up to about four inches tall. The bacon is a damn near perfect mix of crisp and salty; it's sturdy and smoky without being burnt. The freshly sliced creamy avocado balances out the intensity of the pepper jack and the chipotle mayo. It's a nice little battle of flavor that is refereed by the bacon.
The well seasoned beef tastes exactly how a gourmet steak burger should taste. The burger is juicy, savory, peppery, creamy...better yet, the burger is absolutely delicious! This is one of the best, most cared for and tastiest burgers I've ever had the pleasure of shoving into my face. My wife Cara looked at me halfway through hers and said, "This burger tastes like this view looks: heavenly!"
Score: 9 out of 10 ounces
