Of the many tastes and behaviors I developed in childhood that persist in this manchild, a taste for fast food isn't one of them. I rarely find myself struggling to simply drive by a late night drive through, or finding excuses to take other people's kids out to lunch so as to justify a McMeal. This doesn't mean that I engage in that willful, urban, exaggerated befuddlement over its popularity—I am fully aware that fast food plays on our evolutionary drive toward sugar, fat and salt. And laziness. Most days, you can find me indulging in all four. Maybe I am meant to enjoy fast food. Del Taco, here I come.
...Actually, Robyn gave me the heads up that one of our readers suggested we try on the double cheeseburger at Del Taco. A delicious burger hiding in plain sight? Not so much. Here is what it looks like in real life.
It's not a bad looking burger out of the box, but the flavors just don't do much for me. The bun and meat are bland, and veggies are about school lunch quality. There was one thing that caught my attention: This burger came off a hot griddle with a healthy amount of grease...in the good way.
That said, if you are determined to go to a Mexican restaurant in search of a burger, you'd do so much better to head over to Yuca's. This isn't the first time we've mentioned Yuca's, but, being that my Del Taco experience happened just minutes from the two outposts of the seriously delicious burrito stands in Los Feliz, I had to remind you about their cheeseburger: It's fresh, salty, greasy, and a fast food-level bargain. Del Taco—well, it's just fast food.
